Folks,
I don't have a lot of passions with these old gas Mercedes and I could need
some hint's on the following problem, this 450SL came to me for a tune up (yeah
right) it is running too rich, spitting and sputtering, puffing black smoke on
acceloration.
I changed the sparks plugs and fixed the connection to the smaller on the
positive battery pole (supplies computer and other items with power, then I
started the engine, it was fine no black smoke smooth acceloration...., so I
left the car running while I talked to a customer, she ran for about 45 mintes,
I did accelorate the engine a few times to see if she would cut up again, the
engine was well at oprating temperature, and everything was fine, the all of
the sudden while I was chatting with a customer I noticed that the engine
started miss firering at idle, sure enough I walked to the SL and when I
accelorated the engine it was yet again puffing black smoke and cutting up, I'm
about to throw the towel on this car, I know this is a common problem for the
old fuel injection V8's and I did fix one years ago where the smaller wire on
the positive battery pole was having a bad connection, but like I said I fixed
that wire on this car, but she is still cutting up running too rich, if anybody
can give me a hint I'd really appreciated it, by the way the car was driven
daily when it started to mess up, e-mail me directly please. Bnzm...@aol.com

I'm not sure of the Amercan spec but the Euro spec 450's suffer from oil
contamination of the base contacts. Which are situated in the lower body of the
distributor ,causing missfires under acceleration and bad starting.

The U.S versions have the same set up, they call those "trigger points",
however this car is not missing as in "missing" it's clearly running too rich
causing the plugs to file.

I have a 74 450 SEL and recently (well, it really built up
over time) but I was having problems with fuel consuption,
rough engine etc.., I finally had the Cold/Warm Start
control unit checked, and found it was suffering a bad case
of "originl equipment". I Replaced the unit, and following
the books parameters; made sure all the pressure readings
were correct. Lo and Behold; the old beast now runs like a
scalded butt ape........... You might want to get yours
checked out. The pressure readings will tell you a lot.
