I saw a Magma Red SLK sport with oyster int today. Quite simply it is
stunning. I am mulling over a color change. Maybe its just that I've
grown tired of the silver sport, which my dealer has delivered 5 and I
have test driven 3 times! The red looks like a mini SL600/500 sport,
only sportier.

Well, I have a black one and I must confess there are times when I catch
myself unfaithfully flirting with the idea of silver. I hope my car doesn't
get wise. But, if I were you, I'd stay faithful. In the end, as they say,
beauty is in the eye of the beholder - and you may even get tired of red and
regret it! Did you know that there is a special paint available in Germany
that changes color according to the angle that you are looking at it? See,
this is a problem they have thought about. (I think its called liquid
crystal or something like that...) Maybe that's the answer? But I doubt it.
It's kind of like flirting with another woman, but it's a whole lot more
expensive!

Cheers

Aaaagh ... I have to stop reading this group.

Our magma red sport (with charcoal interior) is due in 2-3 weeks.
We've never seen a red SLK so we're in agony over how it will look.
"Stunning"? "Like a mini SL600/500 sport"? Now I *really* can't
stand the wait ... maybe it'll pop up early and put us out of our
misery!

Yes, there are two kinds of those changing-colors - designo-Varicolor and
designo-LCP (liquid crystal paint). But, the price is (for SLK, in Europe,
tax-free price):
designo-Varicolor = 4.000 DEM
deisgno-LCP = 9.200 DEM!
It's kinda cool when your car changes color from dark green to dark blue,
but after a few days I think it becomes annoying. Anyway, my dreamcar is SLK
(AMG styled) in yellowstone/yellowstone interior (designo pack).
BTW, there's one red SLK in my neighbourhood... and personally, I don't like
it... it looks like it's washed out or something... don't like it,
personally... and my friend has silver SLK w/ black-red interior... that's
the real Mercedes, but I think there are too many of those....

For anybody in the U.S. who is unfamiliar with European number formats we
would use a comma (,) where they use a period (.), so the above is 4,000 DEM
and 9,200 DEM or approximately $2,247 and $5,168 (based on an exchange rate
of 1.78 DEM / USD; don't know what the rate is exactly today)

You guys are right, I'm sticking with silver. That is my original gut
call, and I'm going with it. Commonality be damned!

Now I think that is exactly right, even if it is opinion. If there were not
so many silver SLKs and Boxsters (and Hyundais) running around, I would have
gone for the silver. As for red, I had a red BMW convertible before the SLK
I have now and I loved it at first (like Norb with his magma dilemma) and
then I got damn sick of it. So really, I think the best colors are
silver(notwithstanding), white and black because really they are not colors
at all, just shades and one is less likely to tire of them. Silver and White
are fine but too common, so I went for black and people all seem to love it,
me included. It also gives the SLK a more aggressive look (due to matching
black body mouldings) which is not a bad thing for a car that can be
mistaken for a Beverley Hills shopping trolley for a 70 something has-been.

Cheers

Good for you, Norb! My first choice was Black Opal, but
since it's not available anymore. I've tentatively got Brilliant
Silver on my order. I agree that the Magma Red looks a
little washed-out or sun-faded or something. I haven't yet
seen the Firemist. My dealer says they haven't had one
through yet. Had anybody seen an SLK in this color?
