I,ve had this BMW for years and it is still a great car.
The other night I was reading the sales brochure on this car.
One paragraph hit me..........as follows
In the interest of efficiency an engine should only use gas during
acceleration.
Not when your slowing down, or coasting along the highway.
With BMW Digital Motor Electronic(DME),whenever the engine is coasting
at speeds above 960 rpm ,the fuel flow to the cylinders is cut off-without
affecting
anything but the speed at which you use gas.
And that needless to say, will result in increased fuel effiiciency.
So that means when in 5th lets say cruising at 70 mph I back off on the
throttle for an exit ramp ect I have no gas going into this BMW 6 cylinder.?
Or is it a coasting in neutral thing out of gear to a stop?
The line (anything but the speed at which you use gas) is confusing to me.

I have the same vehicle & manual trans. When you lift off the throttle,
the "fuel economy" gauge on the dash will quickly stop to "0" indicating
that the fuel supply has been interrupted. Stepping back into the
accelerator brings the needle "back on" indicating that fuel supply is
resumed. On my car, this system has worked extremely well -- and has
never given me any driveability problems, over the 20+ years that I've
been driving the car. E24 will always be one of the prettiest BMWs!
