320d 65000 3 years old plus a couple of months. Fine crack in one alloy
wheel. Anyone experience similar problem. No apparent reason for crack as
haven't hit a pothole. Running on run-flat tyres. Replies on a postcard
please!

Has anyone else been driving the car? Normally these happen from severe
impact such as potholes like you describe. Maybe you didn't hit one, but
someone else might of if they ever drove the car. I managed to find one
experienced welder in my city who took the chance and repaired one of my
allow rims, but it wasn't without 1,000,000 disclaimers, and even so, I
sold the wheels after a year (with the disclaimer, I didn't hide it),
because I just didn't want to take the chance. I'll say though that I
was able to use them for the entire year without any issues, even past
240km/h :)

There is a major investigation in the UK over this problem, and the latest
is that BMW have removed all of one type of allloy wheel from sale here.
Watch out for a world-wide recall.

Do you know if the wheels are BMW factory OEMs? Or aftermarket? There
are lots of fake "BMW-look-alike" alloy wheels coming out of China that
are very poor quality castings. The porosity in the castings of these
cheap wheels makes them very susceptible to failure -- even if you don't
hit a major pothole. Suppliers to BMW -- like BBS for example -- use a
casting pressurized process that produces a much denser, and stronger
wheel. Forged wheels are by far, the strongest type -- but most
expensive to produce.
