2. i cooked some white rice a few days ago meaning to make it into rice
pudding but haven't yet. i don't want to waste the rice & could use it
tomorrow to make rice pud. how long can the cooked rice stay in the fridge
before it goes off?
3. DS can't have the ordinary food colourings. we can use cochineal but pink
isn't to boyish & DS wants a bit of variety in his playdough & cake icings.
i thought of spinach for green. any ideas for blue or proper red or yellow?
that's it for now!

Um, in place of white sugar you can but it depends on the texture, it
won't always work too well for creaming butter with sugar because it's
generally coarser. It won't replace brown sugar as far as I know
because the texture is completely different.

Dunno. I think probably a couple of days would be my limit. Here's
an interesting website:

Brown sugar is sticky pasty like stuff, and is very different to raw
sugar... I don't think you could substitute one for the other. You
could with white and raw though.

I think rice is one of the high-risk foods for food poisoning... when
you cook it and then cool it you're supposed to spread it out a bit, not
keep it in a clump, so that it cools quicker and more even. This should
be done in the fridge, and not on the bench. Being pregnant you're not
meant to use leftovers after more than 24 hours in the fridge...
Technically ;)

throw the rice out now, it's famous for food poisioning because it has such
a high surface area I believe, don't risk it esp when pregnant, I use it
within 12 hrs or it's in the bin.

done! i never knew that. it's not on the "lists" that ive seen for pg.

DS has multiple serious food allergies so i cook everything from scratch. i
am teaching myself as i go along so i have loads of questions! never got to
learn any of this stuff from my mother.
ta!

I haven't tried this, but you can leave the dough white and color it
with crayons and then knead it as usual. I'm told the colors will
swirl and look really neat.
For blue (or purple) you might try blueberry jam or grape juice.
For red, try strawberry jam or cranberry juice.
Not sure what you could use for yellow.
You can also use a little tempera paint instead of food coloring,
but that might have the same dye in it. I'm not sure.

great suggestions, but all allergens for DS! i knew this was going to be a
problem. i really want to work this out before his birthday as he is not
having a pink cake. may have to settle for white. maybe a snowman or
something (but he really wants thomas).

Does he have to keep these things off his skin as well as
not eating them?
He isn't eating playdoh, right?
IIRC, Elizabeth's DS is contact allergic too..

Perhaps you can use beeswax.
Since tempera won't work, what about watercolor
paint. It will probably be more pastel, but it should
give some color. You can also try soaking some
construction paper in water and seeing if it *bleeds*
some color you can use

Perhaps you can find a natural food coloring for
your cake here?

What about using koolaid?
Try this recipe if he can have drink mixes
SCENTED PLAYDOUGH
Vibrant color, fruity scent!
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup salt
1 package unsweetened drink mix
1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
1 cup boiling water
Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl.
Stir in oil and water,
allow mixture to cool slightly,
then knead until desired consistency.
Store in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
Hint: Let the children play with the playdough when it is
still warm (not hot!) - calming!
This is a recipe for sparkle paint, but you could
do this with playdough too. Add any color of glitter
to make your playdough sparkle.
Sparkle paint
Need:
1/2 cup flour,
1/2 cup water,
1/2 cup salt.
Mix everything together. I also added silver
glitter into the mixture to really give the
mixture some pizzazz!
Good luck

Ugh, that's really harder.

yes, unfortunately he is contact reactive so on the skin is out too. he has
pretty serious allergies.
he doesn't eat playdough (all that salt!) but even so, it gets under their
nails & all over their clothes and handwashing just wouldn't be enough.
a long time ago, when friends were over, they had some biscuits with egg in
it & although we scrubbed & mopped the floor after they left, he still had a
reaction as there must have been some hidden crumbs somewhere. and this is
before his allergies got too bad. we ban all allergens stepping through the
door now!
it's a pain in the bum, but i'm sure i'll figure it out eventually.
i'll try really watered down poster paint or just watercolour in place of
water in the playdough recipe. that might just work. you are brilliant!

that's a good link, thanks. tumeric for yellow would definitely be ok.

nope. citric acid.
