Well, we finally got a w/l mic worth getting! We now want to store it in
the booth, not on stage. I built a drawer in the bottom of the rack/under
the rack when I built the sound booth and was wondering if anybody knows of
a really, really cheap way to build a storage holder for it to go in the
drawer. I can easily put a lock on the drawer. I could get some storage
premade for about $15 for a 6 mic holder, probably less, but was wondering
if anybody knows of a possible free solution, like a source of foam that is
commonly thrown out?

That was quick! I'll have to keep my eyes open for an old couch or chair!
Maybe I'll drive around on garbage day eve. Gee, is that a new holiday : o.
Halmark would love that!

If you really want to do it right .. get a block of foam that will
fill the drawer (and a single layer of 1" for the bottom) .. soak the
big block in water and place plywood on each side .. squeeze it with
some clamps and toss it into the freezer for a day. Break out the
hole saw and cut the holes in the frozen stuff .. worked for me!!

I use #10 solid copper wire in my old Weller soldering gun to
"carve" out slots in the foam. You can shape the wire directly
around the mic or whatever (while cold, of course!) to reproduce
the exact outline.
I use tin cans (with the lip cut off) or short sections of copper pipe
to cut vertical holes in foam. No messy soaking/freezing necessary.

Decent idea, but don't know of many cans made in the US that would be
tall enough while narrow enough to cut the vertical holes without
compressing the foam. That is why I used the water/squeese/freeze
method several times .. got nice smooth holes and the case looked
totally pro done and a lot less cost!! The copper pipe would have to
be thin wall and really sharp .. and since neither copper or tin will
hold an edge for repeated cuts .. think the way I did mine will fill
the bill. PLUS attempting to cut closed cell road case type foam with
a Weller Hot wire set up will just melt the foam and leave a mess ..
now if you are using styrofoam based foam, hot wire works fine.

Just don't be surprised when the worship team starts complaining that the
mic's smell like old beer farts.

Sometimes people just throw out a couch because they don't like it. Also,
this is not a traveling system or I would not waste time saving money.
There is also the Goodwill and Salvation Army stores that might have
something in good condition to buy that might work. Oldsoundguy had a great
idea for making the holes. I had to fight to get the good mic in the first
place and we actually got it by "accident." They did not want to get a
working mic, but wanted to spend the money on a video projector before
getting the sound fixed first (see my other post for that problem). If the
cushion is deteriorating it is not going to get used.

Mike, check in the yellow pages for a foam shop. They might have
some scrap pieces .. totally unused .. at a bargin price .. you want
CLOSED CELL foam as it will not absorb moisture or odors. PLUS it
lasts longer (won't start to crumble.)

Never use the center of the cushion, dats where I let 'em go ;-)

Never use a couch out of a college girl's dorm room. It really doesn't
matter which cushion or place on the cushion. Race unimportant, 'cept you
could take a chance on a Brit.... totally stuck-up.... oh, but I digress,
sorry.

Not pretty.

If I understand your question, you are not needing a perfect fit
travel box. I would cover the bottom and sides with foam and
tack in a straight divider where ever you want to limit the
possibility of rolling. If your drawer is deep and you want to
stand mics on end, just put straight sections across and glue
dividers between. Don't need to do any fancy cutting.
