A friend of mine's band is doing an outdoor gig on June 8th
(Saturday). The gig is in Manassas, VA, and runs about 6 to 11. Their
budget is pretty low, around $200.

I've not priced lighting rigs in a long time (I mainly hang out on
rec.audio.pro), so I don't know if this is incredibly low or not.

Are there any lighting companies in the DC area that I should check
out? Is this budget realistic? What could they expect in terms of
lighting for this kind of dollar level?

If anybody has any contact info, I'll forward it on to this band.

Thanks

Several... Parlights Concert Lighting (Frederick Md) & Atmosphere
(Silver Spring Md), Artistic Concepts Group (Chantilly Va) are a
couple that come to mind....

eh...depends on what they want in the way of lights and the power that
they got to do it with etc.. If they wanna rent 8 pars on two trees
that "chase" on dimmers with no frills that plug into two 20 amp
circuits and do all the work themselves, then $200 is about right for
a weekend rental and they may even have a few bucks left to buy gel
they want...(ACG) If they want someone to set this up and run lights
to their music and they want more then 8 lights on sticks--maybe a
small truss system, then heck no...they are off by about $1k or more
for a production (Atmo).. And lastly....if they are looking for a
full professsional 120kW concert truss rig or Thomas roof to cover the
stage as well...hehe--nope. Try about $3k for a roof (Parlights)...to
start...

thats ballpark in figures.....but you get the idea.
hope this helps... feel free to reply if you want to chat more and
we'll take it to e-mail (this IS a sound newsgroup<g>)...I freelance
in DC for lighting company's and know most of the companies (when
I'm not doin sound--and I'm always lookin for more sound gigs =) )

Generally speaking, in my area, a concert light rig will go fo $10 per
can (1000watt PAR 64) and comes with dimming and control. 'Specials' (ACLs,
moles, etc) are extra.... Moving lights are extra... So, a basic 120K show
will cost $1200.

Depends.... What kind/quantity of liginting are you looking for???

A basic PAR 56 bar system....

Well thanks for letting me know all of this, I'm amazed but you
actually summed it up about the way I thought it would be. I guess I
haven't been out of it that long....<g>

I had not told them yet, but I figured $200 would get them 8 par cans
on trees with a "dimmer pack sequencer". Nobody is gonna setup a large
lighting rig and then run it for that kind of money.

Actually I think for their purposes this will probably work ok. The
gig is outside, but in a covered pavilion, I'm not sure about the
power there and if there is any way to attach lighting (trusses,
etc.), but they are supposed to find out.

At least they are sorting this stuff out two months or so before the
gig rather than the day before.

I'll pass these contacts along to them, thanks again.

(p.s. Do you have an email that I can provide to them? In case their
sound company falls through - they are double booked, but have three
systems so they can cover this, but then again you never know).

Thanks,

Atmosphere actually began in the back of our shop 5 years or so ago.
They are a full production house like Wolfies said. Also try Kinetic
Artistry in Takoma Park MD. They are the primary rental/supply house in
the metro area.
