Hi, does anyone have any comments on the Australian Monitor AM3002 power
amp, specifically running subs at 2 ohms? I'm sick of my Crest Audio CA12's
thermalling out.....

Derek,

The AM3002 (as with most in the AM series) are designed to run at 2 ohm without
distortion. Tough robust and durable. Brisbane Concert Sound were the AM
dealers for Bris for many years but following the Audio Telex take over of AM
they are available from the guys in Commercial Road. Tell Derek Wes sent ya'.

Now Dave what makes you think that I'd jump up on my soapbox to sing the praises
of one of the finest amplifiers ever built? After all the AM series amps handle
a 2 ohm load with no problem, inbuilt thermals, clip guards, built in crossovers
on some models, bridgable (and yes 3000 = 3000 watts), tough casing, easy to see
led display, binding post/xlr/neutrik outputs, THX approved,
contractor/touring/budget models available... And priced reasonably for both
domestic and export market. Just because I have 2 AM900's left in hire stock
which are over 10 years old and have never failed me.

What makes you think I'd have anything to say on this matter?

But thanks for the opportunity.

FG Wes.

While I have no direct experience with the AM3002, I have used AM1000's,
1200's, 1600's and K7Prophiles for over ten years. Without a doubt
Stuart McLean's designs and AM's manufacturing have produced some of the
beefiest, best sounding, most robust power amps in the world, bar none.
And I doubt "your mileage may vary". My $.02.

a specification. When comes to home audio receivers, it's a chip that does some
re-eqing and re-emphisis on the signal...

Opinions, facts, comments?

Modular design, built like a tank (unfortunately with corresponding weight
;-). In an engineers POV (well, mine anyway), these amps are simply
wonderful!

Wish my wallet AND my back could afford them.

With the way the Aussie $ VS US $ is today - you buy an amp and we owe you!!!

The 1000's were dropped a little while ago but the 1200 & 1600's are still
current as are the K7's.

He's still at it too! When AT bought AM Stuart went with them as R&D manager.

I've been using AM1600's for about 8 years and have had 4 x AM2200's working
5 - 6 nights / week without missing a beat, so I know they are reliable. The
AM3002 is a relatively new model though (about 3 years I think) and I have
not even seen one yet. Thanks for your comments everyone.....

From memory THX is a rating given by Lucasfilms/Dolby Labs on the noise rating of the
amp itself. Audible fan noise and white noise on the output. Anyone else fill in the
gaps?

Just so everyone knows the amps we are discussing - find below a short run down
of the available models. Several models were dropped in the past 18 months or
so including the C series (contractor) and a few in the K series.

KA Series - low cost / high output
KA 800 Two Channel Power Amplifier (400 + 400 watts)
KA 1200 Two Channel Power Amplifier (600 + 600 watts)
KA 1500 Two Channel Power Amplifier (750 + 750 watts)
KMa 750 Multichannel Amplifier (6 x 125 watts) - 2RU high

AM/K Series
AM1200 Quad Power Amplifier (4 x 320 watts)
AM1600 Two Channel Power Amplifier (2 x 800 watts)
AM3002 Two Channel Power Amplifier (2 x 1180 watts)
AM2400 Dual Bi Amp (2 x 800 watts / 2 x 400 watts)
1K2 Two Channel Power Amplifier (2 x 600 watts)

All ratings are @ 4 ohms.

Not sure about the AM2200 - thought it was still available but not listed on the
website. The 2200's are a tri-amp, 3 channels designed for use with an active 3
way system. One amp will do the high/mid/lows and the 2200 comes with a built
in crossover.

check them out on the net. www.audiotelex.com.au

Yes I am a dealer - but I'm not trying to sell them to you - just enlighten you!

Hey Wes, the AM2200's are a great amp, but I wish they did come with the
crossover and limiting functions of the AM2400 quad! They were originally
commissioned by PA people to drive their TMS3 rig but most of the original
batch now reside at Lots of Watts..... except mine. I think a few more were
made but the model is now discontinued. I did hear a rumour that they were
going to upgrade the 2200 to drive the EAW KF750, but now Audio Telex does
Turbo.... well

Funny you should say that, rumours have been flying around down here that AT
were about to take on the EAW dealership - based around the fact that the 2200
was the ideal amp to drive the KF750's. P AP sold their CP division to Lottsa
years ago, but retain the Bose LT system. Lottsa are in the process of
upgrading some of the TMS's with EAW and from what I hear they are going after
the Gearhouse audio gear as well (Apogee I think?). Never been a fan of the
TMS's but we use them every year for the local Carols in the Park in Windsor
NSW. Six a side and two for front fill does the job - but I want the good
stuff for next year. They still have the P AP PM3000's running, but are
changing a lot over to the A&H GL series consoles.

It's funny how the AM's got started. Julius Grafton (Connection Magazine
editor) and Stuart McLean started building them many years ago (before JG went
to Jands). Stuart sold his side off about 10 year ago then bought it back
again shortly afterwards when he saw the mess the current owners were getting
themselves into - offshore manufacture, developing lower end amps, domestic
smeg - not the direction he wanted. AT provides a great distribution channel
and it's nice to have some high end drive from them. The AT range of amps and
the Peavys really didn't cut the mustard.

This isn't totally correct. In Australia Audio Telex took
over the Turbosound agency. In New Zealand the agency is
split between Oceania Audio and Audio Telex. We have the
Flash, Flood and TSW ranges, while Audio Telex have the
various other series.

I meant to reply to Derek's post earlier but, as sometimes
happens with these things, I forgot.
