Much of my rig lives in my van when it is not in use. Don't really have any
other place to put it. The van lives in a non-climate controlled garage,
meaning it's cold in the winter and hot/humid in the summer. Although I
haven't had any problems, I am wondering if I am putting my gear at risk
over the long-term. How great is the risk? I'd rather sink my money into
more/better gear than a building to put it in.

Marty,
Temperature extremes by themselves won't do any real harm. If you're
moving it from cold to warm/moist (winter gigs) you do need to allow
enough time for the condensation to evaporate, I suggest a minimum of
2 hours inside, preferrably 3.
Your bigger enemy is humidity. By itself it will cause corrosion of
steel parts in particular, and will also cause existing oxidation
problems to be worse. These issues will typically show up in the
spring, the first time the humidity climbs.
Should you invest in a climate controlled building? No. Just plan to
do regular PM every 6-12 months.

Try a dehumidifier in your van with the gear. I have one in my big
van. We live 30 ft from the ocean and if its turned up to nine your
lips will parch in !0 min in there. This should help with rust and
corrosion.
