We are a trio that includes harmonica or piano, guitars, female vocalist and
we play rest homes, churches, jails etc....maybe 30 or so..today we had
about 45 and the S40 failed after a successful full rehearsal last night.
We have a Yamaha MG 10/2 mixer we trust and want can gig with...
Question:
What power amp brand should we look at? Crest? Behringer? Peavey?
-ps I 'll ask about speakers later on.,...

QSC plx series are a nice lightweight amp up to 3.5kW
the RMX series are cheaper up to 4kW (heavier but not what i'd class as
heavy for an amp)
Crest amps are good workhorses, i have a rack of CA series (not cheap, very
heavy but will probably last forever)
I do not personally like Peavey amps
The behringer EP1500 and ep2500 are a good little amp if you are on a tight
budget. run a little warm at 2ohm loads.

Another option that you might want to consider is a pair of powered speakers
( speakers with built in amplifier )..
You save a little space, weight and possibly some time during setup:
Put the speakers on stands, run AC to each of them and run a signal cable
between the yamaha mixer and the speakers.. power up and play..
DAS DS15A, Electrovoice SXa series, JBL Eon series, Mackie SRM450, FBT Maxx
series are all worth looking at. BUT: do yourself a favor and try the
speakers before you buy any of them..

for light weight but higher cost check the carver amps... perhaps the ZR
500 http://www.carverpro.com/zrampmodels.html

check Yorkville, they have a nice balance between weight, sound quality, and
cost. they come with a nice warrantee
... maybe the TL12 ? http://www.yorkville.com/products.asp?type=29&cat=3

Always nice to see another ham around.

'tis a cool QSL card. Did you stop in 2002, Reason?

Cool rig to, Icom into the Ameritron, clean "get-er-done" rig. Good job! I
like the modern ham that does not have to have a rack of unused
"vintage"gear to upset the XYL. Unless you are a collector of course.

There are some good deals available on used power amps. With
prudent selection, you can buy used without worrying about the amps
failing on you. Since you appear to be doing small
"Speaker-on-a-stick" type gigs, something like a QSC (brand) RMX
(series) amp would work well, the RMX 850 or perhaps the RMX 1450.
Something in the 200-400w per channel range will work fine.
Some of the recent Crown CE series amps have some reliability
problems reported, and I would not recommend the cheapest of their
line. Though heavy, some of their older amps (PowerBase/PowerTech or
Micro/Macro Tech) are very reliable.
I recently got a Crest LT series that I am very happy with. A
Crest LT1000 would be a good choice. Some people have reported using
the newer Yamaha amps in heavy club service for 6-8 months with no
issues.
Peavey amps rarely break, but tend to be rather heavy for
their output (there are exceptions).

With the Behringer EP 1500 as cheap and good as they are (street price
about $250 USD), I sure would not worry about buying used, especially as
you do not know a buch about equipment.
