Can someone explain to me how a Smaart system is hooked up and used?
As far as I understand it you are monitoring what comes out of the desk
and comparing it via a refernce mic to the sound in the venue.
Where is the desk feed sourced from? Do you split the L/R out and send
it to your USB pre(or whatever you are using to get signals into the
computer). Any help here is appreciated. Thanks.

It all depends on how your using it. Smaart has many different
functions. In its basic RTA mode, you don't need to connect it to the
outputs of the mixer at all. The Reference Mike is hooked into you USB
preamp. If you have something like a Tascam US122, it can generate pink
noise too. Otherwise you need a pink noise generator.

Now if your measuring distance from the mike to speaker, or transfer
function, then you would need to hook it up to the outputs.

Another potential problem is calibrated SPL. since most of the mike pre
amps you may use are NOT, you would need a calibrated mike reference
signal generator to set your system up for accurate SPL measurement.
Most of the time that's not needed, but it depends.

YOu can spend days playing with all the functions of smaart........

You would want to take it off a tap of the l/r out or what ever you want to
do a transfer function on.
I have even used a Y on the headphones out seperating the L and R outs and
used the Single R out to look at the R stack. Then L out to look at the L
stack. PFL'ing what I wanted to look at.
Depends on what you are looking for.
Have feedback on the monitors?
PFL the monitor mix and look at it in RTA mod. The ring will show up.
Hope this helps.

It doesn't much matter, honestly. As long as the two signal paths look
something like this...

___EQ___amp___speaker___Ref Mic___Mic Pre___left comp in
Signal __/
Source \____________________________________________right comp in

I don't have a Nice USB Pre like most guys have. I've got a $29 Griffin
iMic that gives me an unbalanced stereo line in. I drive the comp with 2
auxes on the console. Ref mic comes in a channel, then out aux 1 only,
and off to comp L. My noise source (often a cd) comes in a channel, then
runs out aux 2 to comp R AND to whatever output the speaker cluster I'm
measuring is on.

I use a matrix out. That way I can send either a left, right, centre or full
signal ( or whatever)out without any repatching or other fussing around.

I have to assume by a very LARGE strech of imagination that you mean a
computer input and not a comp input? Just checking. ;)
