Last night I'm at a party on a lakefront running on generators. First band
every thing is fine. second band, on which I do fairly often, I cant get a
snare sound. The snare sounds ok (if a little high pitched) when you listen
right there, but no matter how I positioned the mic straight down, right
angles, 45 degrees, it just went boing. I tried with and without
compressor.gate. Tried changing the mic, both D1's. Tried moving the HH
condenser to cover. nothing seemed to work.

I'm doing this band on Wednesday at a car cruz-in outdoor gig (weather
permitting). any suggestions?

Make a little roll of gaffa tape and put it on the head about an inch from
the rim. Very quick fix to remove a lot of nasty overtones.

Failing that try putting a mic top and bottom.

There are lots of commercial dampers, here is a small easy to use one:

Moon-gel is the sanctioned alternative to duck tape. It does the same thing
but doesn't carry the stigma or sticky residue of tape.

However this sort of sounds like the snares were too tight, which drummers
may do if they're getting a lot of sympathetic buzz from the other
instruments. The way to tell is to lightly tap the center of the head with
your finger - you should hear a lot of snare and little to no 'tom' sound.
You may be able to get the guy to loosen the snares, and you may find that
just produces other problems that are worse if the drum hasn't been set up
right.

Every drum seems to have it's own sweet spot, and the further away from that
you get the worse it sounds. If you mix the band regularly and it's a
persistent problem you might want to ask the drummer to bring a couple of
alternate snares to try out.

Try using proper gaffer tape. No residue.

I think at least 80% of the drummers I know would tell you where you could
stick it. They'll be a lot more open to using the the kinds of tools they
would use.

Just my opinion and observation, no disrespect intended.

My earlier comment was motivated by me getting bored with the eternal duck
tape & residue. Proper professional gaffer tape does not leave residue. You
won't find it at a hardware store though.

It's low residue, to be sure, although I've never seen any that left NO
residue, EVER. It depends on what your taping, how long the tape gets
left in place and what the ambient temperature is.

Many drummers don't believe their drums sound like dog-poop through a pa
sometimes ('it sounds fine in the basement')...especially if you tell
them just that. Usually if you just can't get 'anything' usable, it's
the drum itself or the tuning. If the drummer knows how to to, fine.
If not..., well, I've had drummers who were willing to work with me, and
some who were not.

Even a properly tuned drum (snare expecially) can be problematic, and
damping--whatever method--is helpful, especially if time is short.

Temperature and surface can be a problem, but 99% of the time if there is
residue you can simply rub it away with a finger. This is if you leave it
no longer than the time needed for the gig, a day or so is fine.

The most common tape brands around here are Nichiban and Magtape. 20 Euro a
roll though, that makes it 31.40 dollar at current exchange rate.

I'm off to Paris now, but if you need proof, I can make a video tomorrow.

Whew, and i thought $20 USD a roll was high.

The expensive stuff wasn't sticking very well, dew was getting on
everything. Some of my drummers still have tape loops on the toms that I put
there 3 years ago.
Others use "stabilizer rings"

I just rescued a few old drum heads and cut rings and half rings out of
them. If I get a ringing drum, I just offer to drop a ring on to it as a
damper.
