My questions to the group are: How many of you own A&H products? Have
you used A&H recently, and was the experience good? I would especially
like to hear from any rental guys out there who own and rent out these
small Allen & Heath mixers. I know we've talked about this before, but I
can't believe I heard this stuff about A&H power supplies from a former
A&H dealer.
I've just finished a weekend show in Vegas with a GL4000. It performed
flawlessly. Either I've had REALLY GOOD LUCK and missed all the problems,
or maybe their big boards are OK and the little ones are suffering from
poor PSU design?

The answer to life is still '42'. Remember that
I reckon he stood to make more from selling you a m*ckie or behringer. I've
only once had a problem with an A&H and that was because the film crew
decided to run their lights into it (I wasn't there at the time).

There have been problems in the past but by all accounts A&H found them and
fixed them.

I haven't heard of any problems with them and everyone I know who has them
loves them. You sure you're not Greg posting as Sparky?

If ya need a MixWizard, try 8th Street Music:
http://www.8thstreet.com
In SoCal, West LA Music may have them also...haven't been there in awhile,
though.
My experience with A&H (the budget MixWizard series) is that they are a
cut-above Mackie and Behringer (better preamps, eq, flexibility in terms of
connections, and so on). A&Hs cost a bit more, however...

I own (and rent, 3-4 days per week)
3 GL3300's
2 GL2's
2 MixWiz 16:2's (1, 16:2A and 1, 16:2DX)
1-GL3000
(i also own soundcraft, midas and tac consoles)
> Have you used A&H recently, and was the experience good?
Yes!
> I would especially like to hear from any rental guys out there who own and

Here's my experiences, per console:
I usually mix around 180 gigs per year with my A&H's.
Some also go out as blind rentals to another 40-50 shows.
We've rented to everything from Harley Davidson Rodeos, In Laconia NH,
Lion Tamers at fairs, Mettalica Tribute bands with a Pyro crew in Hartford CT,
all the way up to Nationals like Molly Hatchet, Foghat and Staind.
Here are my experiences, per console:
My GL-2's have given me great service, One had a group insert jack croak on it.
It's a readily available Neuterik part, No sweat to fix!! a few screws, and a
few solder blobs.
They have been with me for about 6 years (I think I got them in 94) and make up
my 200-seater system's, 6-mix mini monitor rig. (even my smallest rig has a 6
mix mon split *tim allen grunt* )
My GL3000 was bought used in 96, off a dying club.
Every so often, I 'll have trouble with the internal ribbon cables,
and especially those internal conductive print connectors that run the aux buss
masters and inputs.
As long as I look after it, it stays good to me.
But it's a considerably more high maintenance console than my other A&H's.
A&H realized what they did wrong when they built the 3000,
Because when I open up my 3300's, I see all the features I would have
improved upon if I were designing it, are in there.
(internally and externally).
My Original Mix Wiz' Has never caused me a problem,
It was purchased 2 winters ago (1st release) As a sidecar for opening bands so
that the headliner could have a 3300 all to themselves. worst thing so far, is
when I'd Lost one of it's knobs colored insets. That's all!
I do, However, miss the sys-link capabilities like they had on the GL2's
Where You could stack a bunch of consoles together and share subgroups and aux
busses.
I've Purchased another Mix Wizard since then, (April 99).
They added the FX, had to have it, 2 less things I needed in that sidecar rack!
I've had one glitch with the FX, but later found out it was a problem with my
computer cable,
when I tried to edit the FX (using the software on their website). The mixer
didn't get the stop bit from the computer, and the FX unit was stuck in "DUH"
mode for 2 days, until another Thinkpad-to-MIDI cable came in from IBM.
My 1st GL3300 (32x8) was the one that was snagged for me,
right off the NAMM show floor in '97,
It was the 1st one ever in Massachusetts. (AFAIK)
It's first show was Foghat, in a Hartford CT nightclub,
It Has worked *flawlessly* for me for 506 shows!!.
(It had it's 500th gig anniversary about 3 weeks ago, at local jazz festival)
Not even a scratch! (a little tape scum here and there, though).
This one is my small gig sweetie mixer, it's been everywhere I regularly mix in
New England
well, everywhere that does not require flyware, anyhow.
My 2nd GL3300 (30x8x2stereo) was bought in late 98, for about 1/2 retail, from a
guy who bought it for his home ADAT studio, sadly, it didn't fit in the room the
way he wanted it to, and the store He had purchased it from was sold to a
Non-A&H dealer chain. He was in a divorce, and selling all kinds of goodies (got
a TC-M2000 for $1500, from him, too!)
When I received the console, there were two faders that needed to be replaced
because the Guy's kid had poured something the consistency of that old Mattel
"SLIME" gunk into the console (YECH!!)
On it's maiden gig, the house voltage was sagging, it lasted through the gig,
but sounded funny while playing the "get the drunks out" music. I Went to power
it up then next day, on the bench, and it fizzled out about 15 minutes later.
A&H sent me a new supply (which was much more sturdily built) and a return label
for the dead one.
I Have yet to have another problem with it!
I do not know the actual history of this console, due to the odd fellow I bought
it from, I'm not positive if this was an A&H problem or something his 5 year old
monster--erm--kid had played soccer with (that's futball to you euro cats ;-).
Next was my 3rd GL3300 (44x8x4stereo), (September 99).
Again, Flawless!! Not even a hiccup. 155 gigs as of this weekend.
** DISCLAIMER (for newbies):
I do not sell, service, deal, nor work for A&H,
I've just had great experiences with them.
and YES, I own other consoles. INCLUDING an original 8*bus M*ckie which has not
seen the light of day since 6 months after purchase **

Seriously though, I think that saleman might have been trying to "move
gear", but I still thought I'd check around out there for any horror
stories. Thanks for your affirmation on A&H.
However,
His 3 rental sound systems were all Soundcraft and Crests!
When I called him on this oxymoron, one day, he said:
"In the Store, PV makes me more money,
Out here in the gigs?
These guys make me more money!

Thanks for the personal insult, DICK!
That salesman is a longtime friend of mine and will always be a good
source of gear at dealer cost! He might be a "salesman" from time to
time, but I expect that and can see right through it. Now, if you've
quite finished with your tirade, let me tell you a few things:
> If ya need a MixWizard, try 8th Street Music:
Don't ever, EVER tell me to buy my gear from a music store. I was in one
just last week advising a friend on a speaker purchase. He was looking at
some JBL TR-215 series for his little PA. Now, these were the last set of
JBL's in the music store, cause the dealer didn't want to carry that line
anymore, and the guy was selling them at 1/2 retail. My friend wanted to
buy them just for the price, but asked me to advise him anyway. So we
show up at this store for a demo, and the first guy we see says, "Can I
help you?" Now, it will become evident in just a second that he cannot
and should not be helping anyone with speaker sales!
I followed his "Can I help you?" question with "I'd like to see your
three-way pole mountable speakers, please?" The sales guy takes me over
to the speaker PILE, hesitates for a second, and then points to a Peavey
and says,
"This here is a good three-way speaker. It has a 15" woofer, a horn up
here, and a big port. If you'd like to see our two-way speakers, they're
over here....."
If you haven't seen my problem by now, YOU are one of those guys who
always buys their pro PA from a music store! Anyway, this salesman goes
on to hook a Fisher Price powered mixbox (or was that a Wackie sticker I
saw?) to the pair of JBL TR215's and hands me an SM58 to "test them out
before you buy". OK, fine, but the cabs are side by side in a corner on
the floor with other speakers piled on top of, around, and yes, even in
front of the JBL's!
"How does it sound?" he asks?
"Wellllllllllllllll...." I say, not knowing how to get my friend out of
there quickly without insulting the store owner, who by now is watching us
and looking very happy at the possible sale.
All said and done, we thanked the owner for his time and split! I got my
friend some better speakers with a warranty and free cables at another pro
sound shop for a little more money than he would have paid for those
JBL's. BTW, JBL's TR series are really good for under-stage fill. Just
don't point them at any paying audience members and all will be well!
> In SoCal, West LA Music may have them also...haven't been there in awhile,

please see above story. Nuff said.

Not So! Again, you are off the music chart. I bought an A&H Mixwizard
16:2DX today for $850. The Mackie 1604 VLZ PRO demo model on the store
shelf was, hmmm, $850! Based on my past experience with the A&H mixers
(albeit the large frames, I have yet to mix on an A&H racpac size) and the
PRO advice from this PRO sound newsgroup, I will be very happy with my purchase.
Thank you to all who contributed the valuable information in this thread.
You have influenced the non-purchase of yet another Wackie1604.
Congratulations! (not you, DICK!)

The CS-800 in the club I engineer in has killed two 18" subs, so I wouldn't

I normally wouldn't, but since you were asking about Mackie and Behringer
gear, I figured you weren't interested in pro audio shops. So if a music
store does actually sell high-quality gear (and you know what you want and
don't need any "advice") why would you not purchase your gear there? Do you
feel part of an "elite group" if you exclusively go to a "PRO" audio shop?
Do you feel like a "PRO" if you purchase from a "PRO" shop? "I've got PRO
gear---doesn't matter that I don't know how to use it! Jeepers!"

I think you are comparing the wrong mixers there. The MixWizard WZ14:4:2 is
more comparable to the Mackie 1604, and, again, costs a little more.
The A&H 12:2DX definitely goes for more than the (comparable) Mackie
1402---which is what I was really referring to. Ask your butt-buddy dealer
friend.
If you go out of the MixWizard series, then you really see the difference.
But I guess you are not that "PRO". Or maybe you are too poor? Boo hoo.
If you listened to my advice, you could have picked up that A&H for $835
shipped, no CA taxes from 8thStreet Music. BUT, I understand the benefits
of purchasing from a local dealer rather than saving a few measly bucks by
using a remote dealer. I purchase local because I like to hear and/or see
what I buy.

Wrong. You might want to be careful with some of your "advice".
California law states that you are liable for the sales or use tax
regardless of where you bought the stuff. One might get away without
paying it, but for those of us who have resale permits it makes more
sense to pay it and be done with it than to hope we never get audited.

That doesn't surprise me. With an attitude like yours I certainly wouldn't
have you on any crew of mine.

If you weren't racist you wouldn't have made the comments. Racism comes in
many shades and colours but it's never welcome.
Phildo
You can only make complaints when there is something there that qualifies as
net-abuse. The racist comments and foul language that permeate your posts
are certainly against mindspring's TOS and will easily get your account
yanked.
I suggest you calm down, stop trying to be the big man and failing to
impress everyone and actually make some worthwhile posts.
Phildo
Fake complaint? Your posts warrant a real one. I'd guess that's what
mindspring have probably received by now, quite a few of them in fact. Take
a look at their TOS and AUP. I counted seven violations on your part so far.
> This will escalate as far as the other parties let it.
I think you'll have problems there. Firstly your email account will probably
be yanked soon, secondly the abuse department at your ISP won't tell you who
made the complaints and thirdly you've done plenty to deserve having the
account deleted so don't have a leg to stand on.
Lose the attitude, stop with the racist comments and try contributing to the
group instead of trying to disrupt it.
Phildo
Maybe everyone else should look at their TOS and make they don't violate it
either.

Well, I can create other problems.
My account won't be yanked.
The abuse dept doesn't have to tell me who made the complaints.

I don't want to disrupt the newsgroup, and I'm not the only one with the
attitude. If I was left alone, I would simply continue lurking like I have

Like I said before, if anyone wants to flame me, then email me. I'll gladly
take it off this forum. Otherwise, you get what you give.
Who decides that I "deserve insulting"? Who makes the requirements for
that?
Yes, I am obnoxious without reason. If someone has a problem with that, and
can not restrain themself from responding, then why not respond through
email rather than starting shit on a forum for live sound?

Your earlier responses into this A&H thread, with the name calling,
homophobic innuendos and anti-Semetic garbage do not substantiate your
statement above. Use the clues; this isn't news.
It might prove interesting to see what Mackie would think of the
comments you made about their reps alleged behavior. They might find
those more than a little libelous.
Hey, you made references to my mental capacity. What's next---references to
my mother?
Your statements are not news either. Check your IAUP agreement.

Maybe Mackie would like to know the kind of influence that this group has
had on convincing people not to buy their gear? Maybe once they knew that,
they would have their great marketing team watching this newsgroup and
responding to all of the "What's the best console" queries? That would
bring the newsgroup to the sewer wouldn't it?
They certainly wouldn't care about my comments; they would be more concerned
about the comments that cause them lost sales.
Recommendations against Mackie gear does not constitute libel, but it will
bring those great Mackie marketing guys out of the woodwork if they know
about it...
You did with your racist and sexist comments.

You post your crap on a public forum and yet expect people to reply via
email. Why?
As for being obnoxious without reason, are you happy having no friends or
social life? I suggest changing your attitude as you may find you prefer not
having to sit in the corner dinking by yourself. Why be nasty when being
nice gets so much better results?

Whereas everybody on here (and I think I can safely speak for the whole
group here) found them insulting.

This is usenet. Discussion is what it's there for. His reply was in response
to a very out of place reply you made (which I think m*ckie would be very
interested to read) which should never have made it on to the group in the
first place. You may not have started the thread but you sure as hell
started the arguement.

You've reached that far !!!???

If you will use that against them then you are indeed a racist/sexist. You
may say you're not, your words on here tell a very different story.

I have a very good relationship with my ISPs abuse department. I don't
violate anything. The point here though is YOU are violating your TOS and
AUP and it doesn't mean a thing what everyone else is doing.

Oooh, big man making empty threats. How exactly do you plan to do this?
> My account won't be yanked.
Don't speak too soon.
> The abuse dept doesn't have to tell me who made the complaints.
So how you gonna find out and "create your other problems"? Come on, humour
us. Prove to us you're not a blustering blowhard.

Well you're doing a damn good job at it. So good your ISP will soon be
forced to stop you.

You're the only sexist/homophobic/racist on here. Please take your rants to
alt.nazi.

Yeah, right. If you really want to lurk and prove you mean a single word you
say then just ignore any comments and do that. Of course if you reply again
we can discount that last statement as false like so many others you've
made.
Phildo
OK, you've just showed how entirely clueless you are about usenet. Spot your
mistakes cos I'm happy to let you wallow in your own ignorance.

They already do. They (along with most other manufacturers) monitor this
newsgroup closely. Also, there's a difference between stating your opinion
on a console and stating that mackie sales reps indulge in cocaine fuelled
orgies with hookers. It's the difference between carrying on as normal or
being slapped with a massive libel suit.
>Maybe once they knew that,
> they would have their great marketing team watching this newsgroup and

No because they would be easily identified and ignored.

concerned

We shall see about that. Did anyone actually forward his post to m*ckie?
> Recommendations against Mackie gear does not constitute libel, but it will

I know for a fact they already do. This newsgroup has been one of the topics
in their meetings more than once. You forget that the only thing they can do
to change the opinions of the pros is build better gear. I suggest you try
living in the real world. You never know, you may like it.
Phildo
Try me and see.
Those are my last words on this thread and this topic.
Oops, did I just forward that to sa...@mackie.com and le...@mackie.com with
a quick guide to obtaining people's personal details from their ISP by the
use of subpoenas? What was that, you did too? Oh dear, poor dickie boy will
soon be taking the place of that dealer he mentions above.
Sorry, my mouse slipped, honest. Bad Phildo, bad :>)
I have too much time on my hands. Time to hit the Slimelight methinks

Your problem is _your_ problem. No one else has responsibility for your
keyboard. Apparently, neither do you. You don't seem to remember how the
negativity got started in this "thread". You have an opportunity to
learn from this. Why not take it?

Nice try, genius. You got nothing there and you know it.
As for my personal details, simply search Usenet postings if you want 'em,
there's enough information in my postings to piece my personal details
together. That's how yours can be found.
Boy, I may have an "oops" of my own someday.
Kinda funny perhaps, but it also pulled the carpet away under the formal
complaint I have just typed, so to the recycle bin it goes, because you
- on top of the general flaming he got - made it so even that it becomes
either "everybody guilty" or "no blame, was provoked", so I don't want
to waste mindsprings time with it. I didn't like what he wrote, not that
he is not entitled to his opinions within whatever local law permits,
but I can understand why he wanted to try a real provocation on
getting flamed like he was.
Kind regards
Peter Larsen

As I thought. A blowhard nobody. Sadly for him there are a lot of people on
here that know about usenet and can see right through his bravado.
> Those are my last words on this thread and this topic.
Thank the deity for that. He knows he's on a loser so has tried to save face
and bowed out. Oh well, I just hope he's learned his lesson. Thread closed?
Phildo
M*ckie *does* know how to hire good people to represent their company,
That's how they got so many stores sell their gear.
Face it: no retailer would buy gear from people that resemble talent scouts ;-)

Still trying to provoke me?
Tsk, Tsk. You shouldn't do that.
The only lesson learned is the kind of person YOU are. Why can't you just
file your little complaint and put me in a killfile like everyone else?
Wouldn't that be the civil thing to do? Besides, your complaint becomes
meaningless once you continue to flame. Do you feel smart and powerful that
you can read Usenet headers, know a little about the Internet's
infrastructure, and can file complaints? Well, my friend, remember that you
aren't the only person in the world who has studied law, and there are also
many people that are experts at computer networking. You don't know what I
do for a living. I *KNOW* what you do.
You're barking up the wrong tree. Stop now and save face.
I've already admitted my comments were out of line for a public forum. You
should admit that your continued flaming is also, and end with your childish
rant.
[If you weren't trying to provoke me, then ignore MY little rant (the 4
previous paragraphs) and let's let this thread die. We BOTH can save face.]

> Just for the record, I just want to say that I know 3 reps for M*ckie.

I second that. A great bunch of people, met a couple at the EAW w/s in PHX.
> M*ckie *does* know how to hire good people to represent their company,
> That's how they got so many stores sell their gear.
They don't pretend to claim it is pro gear. They usually said "a great value for
the money", not necessarily "the best value for the money". Then they would be
lying.
> Face it: no retailer would buy gear from people that resemble talent scouts ;-)
Er, MI and guitar shops...have they even heard of Allen & Heath? Betcha it's the
"A" mark fever that gets the crap on the shelves...
