In my opinion, most of the time it is a waste of bucks for the Canare
or the Mogami unless you need a set of very good cables to use in an
area of HIGH RF emissions (the old Marine World in Redwood City, CA
was a prime example of that) I have several hundred cables and patch
cables I made from Belden 8412 that have seen years of use and abuse.
The true key is the quality of the soldering job you do on the
connector .. the best cable in the world won't funcion as it supposed
to through a cold solder joint!!
Markertek sells Canare Star Quad cable for $0.34 a foot. 8412 is $0.47 a
foot. Where do you buy your cables? Is the Canare more expensive than the
Belden there? What are the prices?
I think most of my cables are 8412 but just getting too beat up. I won't
sweat it, I'll go for the best price.
Thanks for the advise.

What part of Alberta? You could try Anixter if you're in or near
Edmonton. If you're further south try Electro Sonic in Calgary. Both of
these places are Belden distributors.
You can get 8412 cheaper than that. We pay $0.39 a foot from H.L. Dalis in
New York (500' spool). I've yet to see anything more durable than the outer
jacket on 8412. I took flame to it once - it smoked a little, but it didn't
melt.

Over here in the UK I tend to make my own mic cables, guitar leads etc up
for myself - at least then I know the job's done right ;-)
I use cable manufactured by a company called "Van Damme" and I find this to
be very good quality, especially when used with "neutrik" xlr or jack plugs,
and it's good for mic cables for on stage use - mine are mostly 10metre to
allow for bigger stages or having to route round onstage equipment like
organs and drum kits that are permanently there and not part of the band
gear.
The last time I bought some of the Van Damme it cost £1.30 a metre - but
given the fact that we Brits are ripped off every which way, it could cost
less over there if it's available.

Is your local store getting Canare from SF marketing? They distribute
Digiflex and Canare ( though there are some other Canadian outlets for
Canare, Glentronix.. and .. well a couple of others)
SF have really cheap prices on pre-made cables.. IT isn't worth making
your own Mic Cables with prices like theirs.
Unless like me you were doing an install and ran into a dumpster filled
with GEPCO Star-Quad, wich is really stiff becauuse of the strain relief,
but has a double braided shield and drain wire wich is nice ( for
soldering)
Thanks Pat, I'm in Edmonton...I'll check out Anixter.Do you know if they
sell small quantities, 100' or less.

I'd guess no. Places like anixter sell full boxes or rolls of cable.
You'd probably be looking at minimum quantities of 100m or 500'.
Electrosonic will sell those lengths, if you can order from RAPCO, where
you are they have a Toronto office... i think there's one in
Winnipeg?????? think
Rapco will havea better price. Also Electrosonic only have Belden.
Glentronix have Canare.. and good prices (905)475-8494

they'll be able to ship it to you in a day or two
