They do seem to be going in for the whole goth/metal crowd, what with
the HM website, some of the endorsees, and then the cute names for
their drivers like "Excecutioner" and "Barbarian".
Are these just some OEM chinese made things or are they actually
designed and/or made by the company?
Along with the speakers and cabinets, they also seem to offer power
amps, then I noticed that some of the other "cheap PA/MI" cabinets on
Ebay by "Legion Sound", "X-Audio" and others will often mention they
use Madison drivers.
I'm figuring these are all made in the same factory or two over in
china, but somebody tell me if I've got it all wrong or not.
They just seemed to have come out of nowhere, and other than Ebay I
have never heard of the company.
I did some Google searches on AAPLS and RAP and the conensus is they
are cheap low to mid grade stuff, but there was no indication of the
origin of the company or where the stuff is made.
No I'm not thinking of buying any of it (I need more bass or PA
cabinets like a hole in my head), I was just curious, as the company
website seems to think they are the coolest thing out there.

I've not heard them myself, but a lot of people on alt.guitar.bass like them
a lot. Do a Google search in that group. At $250, the Legion Sound 810
bass cabinet looks pretty nice. Supposedly good bang for the buck, but I've
never had any first hand experience.
They are all located in the same warehouse in Colorado. The Madison stuff
is all hand-built there...can't really say for sure if the Legion or X-Audio
stuff is, but they do come from the same place. You can buy any of them at
www.steelsound.com, however, I'd recommend dealing with Madison directly if
you can as I had some horrible customer service experience with Steel Sound.
Steel Sound is said to occupy a corner of the warehouse owned by Madison
Speakers...who also does Legion Sound and X-Audio. I can't speak at all for
their PA cabinets or any of their amps/mixers/effects/etc...but as Thomas
Bishop said, the bass cabinets are pretty nice. I'm a regular of
alt.guitar.bass and the Legion Sound stuff is what gets all the praises
there as far as bass cabs go. Haven't heard much about the Madison (more
expensive) or X-Audio (cheap-o) lines really. I personally purchased one of
the "Steel Sound" branded bass cabinets. I got the 1x10" model to use as a
really small practice rig at home. They are hand-built and loaded with
Eminence drivers...and also dirt cheap in price. Sounds great and is light
as a feather. My bad experience came with their customer service...or lack
thereof. I ordered the cab and waited the 4 days, as their "tracking"
website says to do, before getting worried about not having a tracking
number. With no tracking number posted after more than a week I tried
calling their "Customer Service" line and always got an answering machine,
no matter what time of day...I left messages and sent e-mails and got no
response whatsoever. I decided to dig deeper and looked up the DNS
information for steelsound.com and found the contact info for who it's
registered to. It just so happened to be registered to an administrative
assistant type lady at Madison Speakers because she did all that for them
once upon a time. How do I know? Because I called the number that was
listed...it was her cell phone. She's the one who told me the whole story
about Steel Sound using a corner of their warehouse. I told her my
predicament and she promised to check on it and call me back once she got
back from picking her daughter up from school (which she was in the middle
of doing). She called me back later that evening as promised and said she
went over to the SS part of the warehouse to track someone down and asked
about it. They told her that demand had been so high for that cabinet
(because it was a new model for them) that they were just finishing building
them and were waiting on the speakers to come in from Eminence...and that
mine would ship out the next day. She also gave me a tracking number. If
it wasn't for her I would've been left in the dark because my tracking info
was NEVER posted on the SS tracking site to this day...all this was found
out after nearly 2 weeks of waiting, too. I don't mind delays as long as
I'm told about them... I know it's an inexpensive cab and a smaller
company, but that's no excuse for the lack of any kind of customer service
they gave me. Anyway, that's my two cents worth.

My office is about 2 miles from these guys. The Legion stuff has similar
components but is full built overseas. The X-Audio stuff is made from car
stereo drivers. Avoid.

They as much admit that. They also have a storefront a block away run by a
guy name 'Slick'. Hmmm.
I haven't actually listened to any of their stuff, because the storefront
has limited stock and that's the only place to check stuff out.

I actually have some of their higher end raw drivers (Ex 15)in some of my
15"+ 2" boxes , recomended to me by a (former?) poster here. They are
REALLY nice drivers compared to the Kappa Pros formerly loaded ( and the
Eminence Kappa Pro is not a horrible driver by any means.) I even hear tell
of one guy yanking his JBL 2226s in favor of them>

Interesting stuff guys...I sort of figured there was a connection.
I kind of wonder if they build their own speakers, you don't just do
that in a warehouse...I'm figuring those are OEM'd for them by
somebody, I just wondered who.

Well they do allude to a major Taiwanese manufactuer, which
immediately made me think it's OEM custom stuff from P.Audio - not a
bad choice, really.

As I understand it, the Legion and Madison use the same drivers, but the
Madison stuff is assembled here and the Legion stuff over 'there'.

I have a Madison power amp, three monitor wedges that I put Madison 12"
speakers in as a replacement for JBL's, and four sub boxes with double 18"
Madison 400w speakers. Got them all off of ebay. No complaints on any of
them. Not great, but not bad either, and an outstanding value for the
price.
