Anyone come across this behavior in one of these? Any suggestions
beside tossing it?

Send it to Peavey for repair.

Not really an option, nor do I think it's worth it. We have a gig in
a couple of weeks that I need it for (as well as practices) and I
doubt Peavey will get it back to me in that amount of time. Also, I'm
not so sure paying what it would cost to ship this monster there and
back plus the cost of the repair itself would make any sense versus
buying a new amp.
Try banging on it.
I never saw the insides, but perhaps taking a look at interior for
connections and board connections, pots. Try some cleaner.

Sounds like it just needs a service and a check for dry joints etc.. If it
has an output relay, it may need replacing.
Gareth.
Blow all the cob webs out of it.
Make sure the fans are working.
Shoot the level control pots with pro gold.
check all the boards for bad solder connections.

I did just that last night. I didn't get a chance to get to all the
boards yet though. I still need to check the driver board.
Both channels are almost identical. In fact the schematic only shows
one channel for most boards and says that the other is identical. My
plan right now is to swap one board at a time until I can narrow it
down to a specific board, then go from there. Sound reasonable?
Any ideas appreciated.
no, this is very strange?????

Sounds reasonable. If it's a dirty connection cleaning and moving parts
around may fix it.
At first opportunity I'd sell the thing- look at a Behringer 2500. Half the
weight and more power. $300 or so brand new.

I'd love to, but the band is really "retired" so we don't want to
spring for a new one. We only get back together for fun every so
often and the occasional gig, not like the weekly practice and every/
every other weekend gigs like our younger days.
It just so happens we are doing a charity show on the 22nd, so of
course the PA starts acting up now. :(
Why get rid of it? Amps like this are highly valued in the MIdwest to
serve as ballast for rear wheel drive cars in the winter. The more
watts, the better the traction!
I remember once (a few wife's and lifetimes ago) that i fixed one of
these beasts for a bar. Took it back. They never paid me. Went up to the
DJ stand one night at the end of the night and requisitioned the "octal
plug" on the back (which disabled the audio output).
Came back the next day and to everyone's surprise, the amp was out!
I said, "Yes, its under repair warranty, I will take it and fix it now!"
Took it out, put the plug back in it, and brought it back the next day.
Went to the manager and said, Warranty repair no charge, now pay me or
it does not come out of the truck!
Needless to say, i got paid on the spot.
As i recall, i replaced a few SCR's that were used as a crowbar speaker
protection circuit on many of them. Some power switches too.

ROTFL
Your 1.3K is a Hyundai and this thing is a Mack truck.
LOL the shipping on that beast would buy a new ep2500!!!
george
No kidding. The "newer" model CS800 weighs 45lbs according the
manual. My older one is probably a good bit more than that.
I had one when I started in this business in the mid 80's
I would guess its 60 lbs
and for that you got 250watts into 8 ohms

So tonight I swap the driver boards and no change. I then go and swap
the power board (the one with all the power transistors) and now both
channels are working. WTF? Now what? I guess I button it back up
until it decides to crap out again, which will of course happen at the
gig.

Put 'em back in their original places and it'll probably be fine for
a year or two.

Thanks guys,
I'm going to give the connectors a good look for bad solder on the
pins and try to pick up some DeOxit.
