Hello there. I'm in need of a new powered monitor for my acoustic/vocals PA
setup. I use Mackie SRM450's for mains and a CFX12 board. I was using a
Peavey 112PM for the monitor until it crapped out for the last time, which
is to be expected, it's Peavey.
I hear Mackie is going to release an SRM350 soon, which I think would be
great, but I need this now.
I found a dB technologies Twin128 active monitor with two 8" drivers and a
1". I can get it for around $300.
Anyone have any reviews on dB equipment. I've never heard of them. Any other
suggestions around that price range would be great. Thanks much,
Mike

Hey mike. For your budget, I would suggest the Behringer B300 ultrawave
powered speaker. It is usable as a wedge or could be used as main PA
in a pinch. Very similar to the JBL eon or mackie SRM 450. Not quite
as good as meyer sound's UM-100, but that costs alot more. It is loaded
with a single 15" speaker and 2" horn. I hope this can help you.

That would be perfect, totally Mackiefied! :-) I use FBT MaxX 4a myself, and
I'm planning on getting the 2a for monitor. FBT are among the lightest of
Powered speakers. With the same frequency-respons on mains/mons, I think
it's a little easier to get the sound. Today, using a Yamaha MS-60 (Which
btw is OK), I'm never sure that the audience hears what I hear...

I once used Installed JBL Eon powered 15"'s (old genereation) as mains and
decided to take one of my FBT's as monitor. Man, I was blown away by the
sound quality! It's like there were thousands of overtones I've never heard
before, it sounded like butter to my ears (sorry for my english, I'm from
norway...) I felt sorry about the audience, they had a very very dull sound
in compare...

Mike - as much as I hate to admit it in this ng. I have a pair of Fender
1270Ps that I use either one, or both of, when I'm doing a duo or trio. It
has a 10" 2-way coaxial speaker and 100 watt amp. XLR and 1/4" input, volume
and single treble/bass control. $230-280, depending on where you look.
Really small footprint, and a little over 20 lbs.

Aside from a wedge - and even though this is out of your specified budget -
as a solo, give some consideration to in-ear monitors. I only plug one ear,
so I can keep an 'eye' on things externally. I'm primarily using the Shure
wireless PSM600 or the Sennheiser - dependent upon which rig - (either is
fine, with the Senn being a little more wallet friendly). I won't go back to
a wedge.

Actually it's a 1.25" compression driver

I've seen the SRM350 at Plasa. Isn't it on sale yet ?

Yeah, I know 'em.

Compared an dB Opera ( forget the model number ) with an SRM450 a few months
back. The Mackie blew away the equivalent dB.

The dB also claimed more watts than the amplifer delivers. Went inside to check.
The amplifier module is made by my old friends Prosound Pvt in Mumbai ( Bombay )
btw.

I do have 4 Opera 412 MkII and I also know the 415. No experience with
the 128. They offer a reasonable price/value ratio, not pro stuff but
no crap either. The 412s work very well for me, I mainly use them on
acoustic settings with moderate SPL.
I also have a IEM 2200 in ear monitoring system which is excellent
value for the money IMHO.

The company (AEB) is based in Italy and has owned RCF before it was
sold to Mackie, so the are not a new player in the biz.

The model number is important, only the 412/415 have decent amp ratings for
the box. The others are underpowered. Also the 412 (of which I have four)
makes no pretence at trying to reproduce bass, use it from 100hz up and it's
one of the better plastic boxes.

I would REALLY love to go with in ear monitors. Problem is the price.
I'm considering the PSM200 non-wireless version, since I usually sit on
stage. Which is the best, low cost IEM system? I haven't heard reviews on
the Senn model. If I get the Shure's can I insert the E-1's into my custom
ER-15 earplugs? That would be really nice!
Thanks much,
Mike

The only problem with the 200 series is that it is mono. This will be fine
for your current situation, but if you later get into an ensemble and want a
stereo ears mix, you'll have to trade up.
