What are your opinions on the LX w/SM58? Was going to purchase an LX or
Sennheiser Evolution 100 w/E835 as Christmas gift. Pros and cons?

need more info on what your expectations of the unit will be I consider
the SC series(one step up from LX)the lowest professional wireless mic
the sennheiser I have never used but I consider the u4 shure as the
only mic I would buy if replacing or updating from my SC series stuff.

We have four LX systems (2 -lavs, 2- SM58 handhelds) at my church. They are
nice units that work quite well. For me, there are basically two issues.
First, I prefer the Beta 87A handhelds....
Second, and more important, I prefer a system with frequency agility (the
ability to change channels). See, the VHF bands are getting opened up to more
and more uses, so it's becoming more crowded. Harder to find free air space and
no guarantees that it'll stay free (this varies with location). Which an agile
unit, you simple change freqs when you run into a problem. With non-agile units
like the LX series, the only way you can change freqs is to send the unit back
to Shure.

Definitely go with the Evo. We rent both but since getting the Evo in
we have found it's not worth the time to deal with the old Shure vhf
units. the Evos are an amazing package for the price.

I have not used the evo system so this opinion is based on past
experiance with other sennheiser wireless products---YECK--BLAH make me
puke, unsuitable for even a doorstop ,you want me to use that
HAHAHAHAHA,
I have found the 1000 series sennheiser(only I have personally used)
to be with out a doubt the worst of the bad
that being so --Next time I am in a MI store (the evo is not a PRO line)
I will have the chap drag one out so I can kick its proverbial tires.

I have never used any evo mic
I have used older sennheiser wireless with 431 and mk2 caps found them
both lacking in quality

as for sennheiser mic( I know this is not the general opinions of
other pros ) but I (as in me ) have no use for them

I have 421's as so many people ask for them but the duribility and
those damn clips turn me off. The 441 is ok for oh drums BUT so is a
SM81 though I like my VP88 for oh

I guess I like Neumanns ,Beyers, Shures ,audix, and some akgs I just
see no reason to inventory another MI mic esp one that is not speced on
any riders as of yet

As I said I will next time I am in the local guitar center or other
such MI outlet
i am not going to buy them for a extended real life unless they knock
me dead in the store
after all you can only have so many mics esp ones that fill basiclly
a need I do not have.
I have the 184's and the 105's, beta 91&98a's beyer 160 ,m88,RE20,
om7(12pcs), cm311,58&57 both reg and beta,535's,421,d112,scx-1,tgx-
50,201's, earthworks,even have a B&K I can borrow when I run Smmart
so yes I will listen to them in the store and if presented with them I
will try them on stage
I am not closed to finding new mics(if I was I'd still think the D-
112 was a kick mic!!!)
but I do not see a big hole in my mic line up wishing there was a mic
to fill it

Thats a nice collection.

If you got an opportunity you might take a look at following models:

e 602 (low end, kick)
e 604 (toms, or anywhere you need a small dynamic mic)
e 609 (great for guitar amps, you can hang them on the cable, no stand
needed)
e 855 (I have no experience with that, but its their top vocal mic)
MKH series (great condensers), I use a MKH40 live for years now and it
has never let me down.

cheers

Suggest upgrade to Shure SC series
Tone key squelch allows you to turn on and off without thumps
Restricted range of frequencies you can shift to if someones stepping on
you.
Even better idea to use UC series and have a full range of frequencies
I'm not a sennheiser fan until the top of their range.

I have experience with that one. You have more trouble with feedback but it
sounds better. I would go with the 845.
Now they introduced a condensor vocal mike the 865. I didn't try this one

Those would be the e604 (toms/snare) and the e602 (kick/floor).
The 604's sound much like an SM57 does on a tom, but in a smaller package,
It's not an "end all" tom mic, But they are certainly convenient for those
tightly packed drum kits.

The 602 sounds like a D112 with a cut between 800-250Hz, It's slowly turning
into one of my favorite dynamic kick mics for general use. Still doesn't
beat out the Shure 91a, but that's not a dynamic mic.

I think You'll be impressed at the changes in Sennheisers sound, Considering
Your preference for Audix, I can't say for the senn's will blow You away,
but You will notice some serious improvements.

There are two levels of Senny quality - the MI and Pro level. Going back to the
days of the Black Fires their MI level mics were OK but not a patch on their
studio and pro line mics. When a single channel of radio can cost up to AU$15k
they must be doing something right. Used to work with a CP company who used 30
channels of Senny UHF. Actually was cheaper to fly to Germany and pick up!
That's where I first heard the Sennys, Neumanns & AKG's being used. Run through
an Altec rig powered by Yamaha & Crown Amps. Klark & Technik and Yamaha
outboards and PM consoles. All Yamaha was pre off shore quality so it was the
good stuff.

Ever since this I have always had a soft spot for the Sennys and keep a few in
my stock for corporate gigs only. The new stuff (Evos) sound great and although
I still like the old stuff - I can live with the new.

Wes.

e604s are great mics for an in house set-up, but if it is true tonal quality
that you are after i cannot fault the shure sm98. Kick drums are a slightly
different matter in which case I cant fault a sm91/m88 combo... try it I
think you'll like it!
