Hi,
As I posted last week I'm looking at buying some new speakers - I've seen
the HK audio range advertised a few times but can't find much in the way of
comments from users. I'd like to use them for rock/pop bands to audiences
of upto 200.

I wonder what anyone thinks of the HK premium pro 1x18 subs with 1 x15 plus
horn vs. the EV force or equivalent Yamaha setup probably driven by a pair
of behringer ep2500 amps (one for subs, one for top/mids).

http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/ContentDetail/ModelSeriesDetail/0,,CNTID%253D43807%2526CTID%253D560500,00.html

I'm led to believe the JBL jrx sub and 15 mid top wouldn't compare very
well.

On a related note how does everyone feel about using poles to support the
top/mid cabs for venues where the stage is tiny?

Thanks
John

Of the lot my personal choice would be the HK's as they are a sweet
sounding unit overall. However I can't stress this enough,You need to
go and listen to each of the systems yourself. All the units are
you've listed are reliable and well constructed so ultimately it's
going to be down to which cabs you like the sound of best. If you
have the option don't rule out mixing cabinets, for example you might
prefer the HK tops and Yamaha subs.

That's putting it nicely. JBL have made some legendary drivers over
the years, but alas their smaller cabinets are mostly crap.

Poles are fine, I use them all the time in sub 1000 people venues. The
pole lifts the top cab high enough to get the HF over the punters
heads. They are ideal for cramped locations with low small stages and
non existant stages.

Thanks Ian,
I've used the yamha cabs several times in the past and I know they would
work fine (although I'm toying with getting 2 pair of 112 cabs instead of 1
pair of 115).

The spec's on the HK audio website don't mention what the boxes are made of
but on paper they seem better than the Yamaha's (although we all know how
they can be made to read better than reality), and no one within reasonable
distance stocks them so I'm curious to see any user reports.

If you were turning up to mix a band and they had some of these speakers
which would make you more confident that the rig is upto the job? I guess
the HK audio?

Thanks again
John

I own and have sold a few HK Audio syetems. I would choose these over the
other models mentioned. I don't think anything n this price range is better.

The smaller HK units are MDF, and the larger ones a ply of birch and MDF
(?). The HKs use B&C, Eminance, and SICA (?) drivers.

Thanks for that but just to be clear - do you mean the cheaper units
(powerworks range) are MDF and the Linear and Premium pro ranges are a ply
or that the smaller 12" cabs are mdf and the larger 18" subs are ply?

Thanks
John

Not sure on specific models sorry. My generalised comments relate to
experience with LUCAS, ELIAS, and Projector active models. I *assume* the
passive models work on a similar principle, with cabinet material depending
on weight/size.

Or maybe unless it specifically mentions in the glossy 'ply' then assume
MDF. Best check direct with HK
http://www.hkaudio.com/company.php?mode=contact .

Hi John,

Given some of the smoking piles of shite I've had the misfortune to
have to work with over the years (rubbish inhouse systems mostly) I
can honestly say I'd be quite happy to work with any of the gear being
discussed in this thread (and have worked with it all many times).

Each of the systems under discussion has different sonic properties,
and it's really of finding a choice you like. No single rig is ever
perfect which is why I suggested being open to 'mix and match'

eary dec 2006 I bought a pair of the yam c115's,(find my review in google)
they are ok
they sound better louder rather than quieter
they don't sound as good as the behringers
they LOOK a hell of a ot better than the behringers
they are useable for non pro level work, and low stress pro level
applications
the c series have the same drivers as the s series, just much better
cosmetics
in fact its a very good looking box

I haven't used this range but I have used the ELIAS system a lot and love it
to bits. Very sweet sound. HK audio is good gear and I would rate it over
the other two.

I've always used poles and never had any problems.

The new series has a 20 mm screw fitting for the poles in the bass bins.
Never had any problems with this. Wish every speaker manufacturer did
this......
