- No tool box is complete without a "Q box".

- You may want to replace your "Y" cables with "Z" (2m, 2f) cables. It
makes a unisex "Y" cable. Just leave the extra connector dangle or sex
change it and use it as a third out. Very flexible.

- An arsenal of equipment fuses.

- A folding luggage dolly (for that stray rack of RF units that came in
the rental car).

- More Sharpies.

Here's some I've found useful:

wire strippers
wire cutters,
assorted screwdrivers, vice grips and other basic hand tools,
I have a homebrewed xlr and quarter inch cable tester. One could
always add sockets for 5 pin din and other plugs on it.
I'd have to add two more push buttons for those pins as well.
Also, a good volt/ohmmeter is an essential for your kit.
Finally a pair of headphones.

AAA Maggie also, for clipping to your lanyard. Very useful for amp rack
hunting sessions or that 'I-just-stepped-in-from-the-sunny-outdoors"
feeling. Ya'll know waht I mean.

Add an SPL meter to the list. The local cops will love you for it.
A Whirlwind "Q-Box"
Always more Sharpies, but get them in colors. Red for mics, blue for
drums, green for playback and that annoying V.O.G. mic. Come on

I've seen a couple guys use a "miners lamp" type thing; with an elastic
head band and a light.

If I'm in a gig where I cant get enough auxes for the dat mix, as a last
ditch I can use em for room recordings - straight desk mixes are often worse
than useless they're so misleading, - so I just have these as a quick +
rough way of getting a room sound to tape. Show tapes can be giving em
enough rope to hang you with sometimes, but for the first few shows of a
tour is a pretty useful way of finding out what's working and what aint...

I would add:

A Phase Checker (cricket)

2 XLR Phase inverter barrels.
(In case You get an older console with no phase switches,
or noticed a swapped cable 3 seconds before showtime)

An 18" long (0.5m) TRS cable, with one female end, and one right angle male end.

(So You won't bend Your headphone's plug to hell,
if You get a console with a below armrest headphone jack)

5 to 10 extra mini-Maglite bulbs!!
(drop it when it's on, and no more bulb!)

Input lists, Stage plots, and Tech riders.
(3 times as many as You'd think You'll need!)

TWO address books or day planners or palm pilots, whatever You use.
(in case you loose one)

A DI sized transformer Splitter box.
(buzzzzzzzzzzzz)

a Yellow A4 (legal) notepad.
(Yellow with black sharpie is Highly visible when the ClearCom dies,
or for NO DRINKS signs)

A crescent wrench!
(Truck mirrors come loose, good weapon in a pinch)

Band-Aids
Antacids
Diarrhea medication

Cigarette lighter, and scented candle
(To quell the smell in the event You need the above medication)

All those AES papers You've been meaning to read but haven't found the time.

Whirlwind product.

Best little tool $139.95 can buy. It clips onto your tool belt and
here's a partial list of what it will do.

mic/line level headphone amp (also has built in speaker)
detects phantom power
detects intercom power
tone generator (-50, -20, +4)
built in mic (-50, -20, +4)
works as an intercom station
list goes on forever.

I couldn't get the page to come up, (server must be down) but here's a
link to their home page.

ruler
compasses
Universal power supply
Clip on fan
Clip on lamp
business cards
Glue
Stapler
Bungee cords
Spare MCBs/Fuses for various boards

I use one of these - definately an essential - can work wiring something
with both hands frr and be able to talk at the same time.
So i can wire into a fuse board with all power off if needed, or looking in
the back of a rack that needs rewiring in a dark club

Yeah but does yours come in electric blue and have your name engraved on it
like mine? [1]

At least there's no confusion as to who it belongs to and no chance of
someone appropriating it.

Always worth engraving or marking your tools.

- Clean shirt (see beer remark above).
- A fresh pair of socks. If your feet start to feel like (can't find the

(or at least it does for this flatfooted guy).
- Business cards of yourself and a few competetors (hand your own if the gig

- Inventory list.
- ASPIRIN!

None of the above can be plugged into a socket BTW (which makes me feel

After losing three expensive multimeters to theft, I went to Radio Shack
and bought a $20 shirt pocket model. The leads coil up into the lid, it
measures AC, DC, Ohms, and has a "beep" continuity checker. No more
"lost" meters for this guy! It's been around for over 18 months and still
going strong.

I've had mine for years. One of the clips for the leads broke, and the
battery cover comes off once in awhile. Other than that, it's great - nice
and small, auto-ranging...
