Greetings.

I have a question regarding posting etiquette:

If I do not quote from the previous post in thread (my text is the only text
on the message), am I top posting or bottom posting?
Will it bother anyone if I delete previous quotes, provided I give
sufficient background/context?

Just asking before the next 56 posts dump a load of manure on me ;)

IMHO, quoting NOTHING is worse than the supposed "blunder" of quoting at the
wrong end. (A point of etiquette whose discussion has caused far more
off-topic noise on this newsgroup than any actual posting at the wrong end.)
Sometimes I just yell "GET A LIFE, PEOPLE!" at the screen lately(!)

We have already discussed (ad nauseum) the problem with breaking the thread
by eliminating all contextual quoting. It doesn't need to be discussed
again.

Not clear how you would "give sufficient background/context" without
quoting. If you try to paraphrase, you run the risk of misunderstanding or
misrepresenting (accidental or deliberate).

I must say its pretty sad when new people feel they have to make a opening
statement like this one to a group of a bunch of sound guys. Personally I
don't give a flying fuck how you post!!! as long as *your* text is separated
enough to tell that the text you are typing are the words that I am supposed
to think are coming from *your* keyboard, also... say something that has to
do with SR, don't call me "little buddy", and have a cool attitude!

Mid posting? <grin>
It doesn´t matter.

If the background/context is clear - no.

>Just asking before the next 56 posts dump a load of manure on me ;)

Only very stubborn or ignorant posters receive that treatment. - In my
opinion it would be better to ignore them (using the newsreaders
filter). That would keep the noise level down.

BTW I read a number of groups and this one ain´t half as "mean" as
some people think. Some are a lot more strict on usenet etiquette.
What you get here is just a "hard reflection" on your own attitude.

Usually we try to keep in some of the original post so people know WHO it is you
are replying to and WHAT you are replying to. Although if you address to
someone specific and make mention of the original post then that's OK.

Jimbo,

If you read the responses to you posts, you'll find that I already addressed
that one (the post in which I interpret your results to mean that nearly
four times as many respondents preferred bottom-posting to top-posting).

Anyway, I asked a specific question. If you don't care to answer it, that
is your choice. But if not, why waste bandwidth with an irrelevant
response?

You take care, also

To all of the people who responded:

Thank you. You have given me enough good reasons as to why you prefer
selective quoting, versus paraphrasing. I will comply.

P.S. to Michael Gaster: I agree (about it being sad). However, based upon
the recent spate of Jimbo-Flames, can you blame me for asking?

Math and stats are wonderful, but there is the issue of the amount of
newbies, so math may be misleading. Also it is not an etiquette issue
per se, it is "comply or remain unread".

You could of course also search the newsgroup tree for a newsgroup that
has just a vague resemblance with the topic matter.
