Unless you have no electricity in India, you can recharge the lithium
battery that came with your 702. All you need is an international power
adapter/transformer to adjust the different voltages in India.
When you use your 702 with the additional battery pack, you can either use
it with both the lithium and the normal AA's, for extended playback, since
the player will use both battery sources simultaneously. Or, you could use
each battery one at a time. I would recommend using both batteries at the
same time for convenience... and the two AA batteries will not charge the
lithium battery; the lithium battery can only be charged from the AC
adapter.
I hope this has been of some help!

Can't tell you about the Sharp but I can tell you about a Sony R2
External AAA pack will not charge the internal battery You may remove it
HOWEVER... You might wish to consider something like the battery pack
adapter I just made for my Sony R2... BIG BATTERIES (D cells) instead
of AAA's Note, I could have made it so it would charge as well but can not
see an advantage to charging the internal battery with an external battery
(Unless it's the one in my car, in which case other considerations apply)

I'm going to invest in a "Solar Battery Charger" (Under 30 bucks, designed for
cars, more toy than tool when it comes to a car battery) and a few bucks for
an adapter to see if I can make it feed the MD... That should be interesting
When I'm done.... I'll post something... Heck, I'll likely tell SONY too
I'm visualizing the circuit (Very simple) even as I type

According to the manual which came with 702, you should always
leave the lithium barrery in 702 when you use add-on battery case,
The manual didn't say anything about the charging with barrery pack.
Just a quick question, how much did you pay for the battery pack?
Most of the stores ask for 40$ and I think it is really a scam for
such a trivial gadget.

If you didn't want portability, and wanted to buy fewer alkaline cells, get
the holder that holds 4 D-cells, it should recharge your battery several
times before the cells are drained.

It has been reported that if you drop the voltage to 4.5v (3 batteries
instead of 4), it won't recharge the internal battery. The Sharp PSU
provides 5v, so the voltage regulator might be getting a bit hot
burning off the extra volt.

About 8, assuming the internal battery is 0.5Ah. D-cells will also
run the deck for a lot longer.
There's no reason why you shouldn't put ni-cads into the external
battery pack, but you will need some sort of voltage monitor to avoid
over-discharging them.

Nickel-Cadmium batteries perform best when allowed to
discharge completely. Under-discharging them leads to
a reduction in capacity known as the "memory effect".
Lead-Acid batteries can be damaged by full discharge.
It is appropriate to monitor their voltage carefully.
I made an external battery pack for my Sharp MD-MS702
using four AA Nickel-Metal Hydride cells. These cells
are a little over 1.2 Volts, when fully charged. Four
of them in series results in 5 Volts, exactly what is
expected by the DC IN receptacle. These are available
at Radio Shack, Catalog Number 23-525. They also sell
a 1-hour charger, Catalog Number 23-405. The AA Ni-MH
cells have a 1200 milliamp-hour capacity, by the way.
This is 86% of D Ni-Cd cells, with 1400 mAh capacity.
Also, Ni-MH cells experience less of a memory effect.
I don't recommend delivering 6 Volts to the DC input.
This would be the total with four Alkaline Batteries.
The DC input receptacle on the Sharp MD-MS702 accepts
between 4 V and 5.5 V DC, according to page 29 of the
service manual, which is available online at the URL:
<http://www.connact.com/~eaw/minidisc/ms701_service_frame.html>
Finally, the correct plug is Catalog Number 274-1532.

Also, there is a danger in discharging a NiCd battery (consisting of
cells in series) too far. If some cells are weaker than others, a point
may be reached where one cell is pushed to reverse polarity. This
*will* damage it.
