I about at the end of my rope on this one...

I have 2 MZ-R30's. One is fine the other exhibits a bit of a problem...

a.. Have noticed this symptom on MANY occasions…I have recorded anywhere
from 2-30 tracks (verbally saying "track 5, track 6, track 7". I then
navigate to track 7. When I press 7 I see the track quickly flash to track 2
in the display …what SAYS TRACK #7 on the display will actually be playing
track #2!?! In fact, if you HOLD DOWN PLAY while on track 7…you will clearly
see track 2 listed UNTIL you release the play button.

This unit has been in the shop since JULY 22, 1998!?! Originally it would
often times just not recognize the mic to allow me to record. However, the
problem listed above occurred also.

I got the unit back on October 10th...took it home...and the tracks STILL
didn't play correctly though it now records properly.

Today, December 18, 1998, I picked it up after another 2 months without it.
It still does the same thing. This company here in Dallas said Sony would
not trade it out for a new one and that I'd have to take it to another
service center to have Sony do this---this makes no sense...why would Sony
be willing to replace it with another dealer and not them.

This infuriates me!!! What makes me more angry is that Sony said this is
typical on this unit (gimme a break...erratic play back is NORMAL)!!!
That's hard for me to believe seeing how I have another and some of friends
have never seen this problem either on theirs. Of course, Sony seem to
admit at one time that they have never seen this problem either.

Can anyone advise who to talk to! The company I had it in for service said
they couldn't give me the direct number to some guy named JAMES GRIGIRON
(they said he'd hang up the second he knew he was talking to a customer) who
apparently is the Dallas Sony representative or they would be pulled by Sony
as a service center!?!

I'm sure someone out there knows someone that I can contact. This unit is
CLEARLY DEFECTIVE and should be replaced with a new one. My problem is that
I've already spent around $100.00 on the unit to begin with and I'm not
really interested in paying anymore.

Many thanks for any advice or numbers or anything...I'll keep any
information someone can provide confidential. I am the president of the
Dallas/Ft. Worth Professional Videographers Association and I'm sure
somehow, someway I can put some pressure on Sony. What kills me is that I
have so many other of their products including a 46" big screen...what's the
big deal in replacing a MD!?!

Im not sure about how you go about things in the states, but in england, i
would have personally rung up Sony and given them an earfull about how if i
spend as much money on a piece of kit as ive just spent ton this defective
MD recorder, then i expect to be able to enjoy it, and if such a sucessful
multinational corporation as Sony can afford to keep me happy by at least
giving me a new MD player then theyre quite frankly a piece of crap and if
they treated all of their customers in this way then they wouldnt be where
they are now and.......

(if you decide to talk to the retailer then just replace the word sony with
the name of the retailer)

obviously i wouldnt get quite as worked up as that but ive had many problems
with many different items over the years, and if it cant be repaired and it
genuinely isnt my fault and its still under the warranty and my complaint
applies to the rules in the warranty ( a lot of ands i know) then why arent
i entitled to what ive actually paid for?????

my advice is to get any number for Sony you can find, possibly from the
retailer, possibly through directory enquiries (or the US equivalent) and
then ask for their customer services number. then just go through those
annoying systems (press 1 for help with your cassette player, press 2 for
help with your TV, press 3 if you cant hear what im saying...) until you
finally get hold of someone and then DONT LET GO!!! until you get a result.

thats what Id do anyway.

oh wait - i havent answered your question.
still

i might as well post this now i typed it - it might help...
