Hey, Phil
That would be very sweet... If I could find one I would throw out the
old 8-track..... from my ford POS... heh :) I love my portable R-50 but I
doubt there is a 8-track car kit... LOL
It is definitely worth it, IMO. After living with a broken tape deck
for some time, I bought the Sony 7900 MD deck about 2 years ago. I was
in heaven, making mixes and listening to them in the car. But, slowly I
came to dislike the deck just a little bit. My main gripe, and it is a
silly one, is that, after spending all the time to label tracks with
artist and title, the Sony refused to scroll the title (at least more
than once). And, as my free time for making MDs grew slim, and driving
people around occured more frequently, I missed having a CD player.
People would get in, be amazed at the deck (and MDs in general) and
then pull out a CD to play (which of course couldn't be done). Anyway,
to make a long story short, about 3 months ago, I cracked and bought
the Panasonic CD/MD combo deck. It has a slot for each media, so I can
play both in my car. A changer (as you suggested) is a great idea too,
but since _I_ don't have many CDs, it would be a hassle to put my
guests CDs in the changer. The deck I bought eliminates that problem.
It is a very sweet looking deck, with many a function. I refuse to
comment on sound quality, as my ears are not your ears and my tastes
are not yours, but it is a good sounding deck (as was the Sony 7900).

The one I am most interested in is the JVC KD-MX3000 wich has both MD and CD in
the same slot in a single size DIN unit. I already have a JVC 12 disc CD
changer which I believe is compatible with this unit. Very intersting. Quite
expensive though. Suggested retail is $750 USD (Ilive in Canada with a
suggested retail of $1500 CDN, Ouch!)
The best pice I have seen is at http://store.autotoys.com for $493 I believe.
Not bad.
I wish more people would buy some so the price would go down.

I'm going to be getting a new car in the next 6 months and I'm planning on
getting an MD car deck, but I also want one that will control a CD changer as
well. I have to have both.

I am interested in why you are interested in the JVC. Have you seen any
info or pictures of the Panasonic MD/CD combo deck? I closely compared
the two before deciding on the Panasonic. The fact you have a JVC
changer already somewhat changes things, I understand that. However, I
thought of the practicallity of having one slots (JVC) as opposed to
two slots (Panasonic), and that was one main reason in me not getting
JVC. Personally, I liked the looks of the Panasonic much more (but
others might hate it), and the remote had more features. One plus for
JVC is its "auto cruise" noise system... I have never heard it in
action, but in theory I think it would be nice. In Edmonton (Canada)
the JVC retails for $1100, while the Panasonic goes for $1500. I paid
$800 for the deck from a local company called Certified Radio.
Surprisingly, I was the fourth person to buy that deck from that
store...so there are others out there helping create demand :-)
thanks,
Sagaz

Back to the point. Maybe I'll look up the Panasonic. What is the model? Is
it a single size DIN.
Also what is the address of the store you bought yours from. Maybe you coul
hook me up for a deal. Obviously I have not gotten a price on the Panasonic
around here but I can get the JVC for $1050 tax in. My sister works there
and that's the best they will do.
I couldn't find it on Panasonic's page either, but here's a link to a
number of other car MD players:

"You are in a twisty little maze of URL's, all different."
Still, a changer is a changer and not having to buy another makes a
difference. Do you have any expereince with "auto cruise". I am curious
if it makes much of a difference.

The model number is MXE777, single DIN. It is not on Panasonics site,
but just recently someone posted a url for the info in this group. I
can take a picture of mine (in day and night) and post that if you are
interested.

I don't have the address handy, and I don't know what kind of deal I
could get a second time. I had to haggle with the store for 4 hours for
the price I got, plus it was with a package deal, so that made a
difference.
If there is anything else I can do to help you decide, let me know.

I have seen it at work in my friends dads GMC Z-71 pickup. Works great and
it is variable (adjust the change in volume you want) or you can turn it
off. I like it.

We'll I wont be buying for a month or so, so I may come across some more
info on the MXE777 or maybe some new lines will be comming out.
Anyhow, I e-mailed Panasonic wondering why such a company would not have up
to date info on their site. Especially on such big ticket (for them) audio
products where the buyer will certainly want to make a well informed
decision about this product. I am usually pretty compulsive-impulsive and
free spending when it comes to buying little toys. But when were talking
over a grand I start to think a little bit.
Jeff
thanks in advance.

But there is! Get one of those 8 track/cassette adapters and then use
a casette/miniplug adapter. It works...

Since I have been too lazy to take both day and night shots of my
deck... here is a link to an animated gif that shows you the deck...

Do note that it is not the _exact_ deck, but the CD only version. The
MD/CD unit looks identical except for markings which you can't see in
this picture anyway.
thanks in advance, Sagaz
I love the unit. I just wish Panasonic had other stuff (MD changers)
that I could add on. The unit looks good to my eyes, and it has many
great functions. I paid $800CDN for it, from a local store in Edmonton.
If cost is a major concern for you, consider getting a tape deck with a
line-in jack. I picked up one of the cheapest ones I could find
(Pyramid 2013CD, and YES it is a tape deck) for $75. I run my portable
CD and MD through it and it sounds pretty darn good. If sound quality
is an issue, just bring your MD to the showroom and plug it in for
yourself.
Downsides of my system:
1) no changers
2) I have to find somewhere to stash the portable itself, like under my
seat or something
Upsides (is that even a word?):
1) DIRT CHEAP
2) I can plug whatever the hell device I want into it
3) I can still play tapes
