I like to make compilations, and often change a few tracks each week, so i
guess i'm looking for a minidisc which is particularly durable. Thanks.
I think a better way to phrase this type of inquiry is in terms of whether
there are Mds that are NOT durable and reliable, as just about all of the
brands are just fine. I would guess that no matter what brand you use, you
might come across an occasional dud-disc that will cause dropouts or (even more
likely) has some minor mechanical flaw.
Other differences are in terms of how the discs look and how they are packaged.
I have some Victor ones that I like because they came in hinged cases. But
usually I just buy the ones that are cheap. Some people have expressed
disapproval of Hi-Space brand, but I've used them and never had any problem.
Same for Memorex, which has been known for problems with their tape media.
I purchased a large volume of TDK discs from Minidisco.com recently, and
although they include only a "sleeve" type plastic case, the discs themselves
are just fine, thanks.
So I guess the bottom line is to look at price, aesthetics, etc., and not to
worry too much about the whole issue.

Yeah, I like JVC too. The blue ones look especially good.

I like the TDK X-RG 74min discs at the moment. They are quite durable, and not
too expensive. I have one that has been trodden on, cycled over, and is still
working. The Studio grade discs are very durable, but the boxes are too big,
and in my opinion the extra durability you get is not worth the extra price
you pay.

No. The might all record the same sound, but the "build" of different MDs
may differ, /slightly/. A "premium" MD may use more durable materials and
may perhaps be less prone to errors. However, personally, I just buy the
ones that look the most attractive and are reasonably priced. I wouldn't
waste money on so called premium ones.
Anyway, back to the original question, what is the best blank MD? JVC ones
are pretty good; completely translucent and comes with nice cassette-style
flip cases. Get the blue ones if possible.

The cheaper they are, the easier they are to damage when you drop them.
It's due to the thinner cheaper plastic used to build the shell. I know
you could say you don't plan to drop your minidiscs, but accidents
happen. If you are out on the road regularly and walking around with
them in your posket, them it's worth paying a bit more for a slightly
tougher one. If you only ever play them in the car, or at home, then the
cheapest ones will do.

The *best* blank minidisc? The best 74 minute MDs I can think of are
the Sony ES minidiscs. They're ceramic instead of plastic, and they take a
real beating! However, they're also about $5 a *piece*, so quality build
comes at a cost!
Then there's also the 80 minute MD's from Sony if you're interested in
squeezing an extra track or two onto your compilations.
If you're merely looking for the best brand to use everyday, any of the
less expensive JVC or Sony blanks are more than durable enough for
"everyday" use.

Jeez, sounds as loony as the TDK metal tapes - the ones that are
made of 3 major pieces: 2 pieces of 'plexiglass' sandwiching the
metallic frame. This TDK sounded good, but was a bit expensive
and heavy (but hey, I'm not complaining!)
BTW, where did you get these? Its got me interested...

Share what you know. Learn what you don't.
Of the one's that I have tried TDK XG seem to be the nicest of the £1.99
batch. I have not (yet) tried JVC ones.
