The Altec 3184 is rare and incredibly low distortion woofer capable of of
1.6" of peak to peak excursion for house shuddering bass. It has been
recently re-coned by the Altec-Lansing factory located at 10500 West Reno,
Oklahoma City, so it is functionally like a new speaker and cosmetically
excellent.

The only Altec Lansing factories are in China. Most likely they were done by
Great Plains Audio, who does the service work for Altec on older gear.
The current Altec is a car stereo company that used to call itself
Sparkomatic. They bought the name. They are not Altec no matter what their
pretensions are. They are a company that sources product.
Not saying anything bad about your speakers. But I can't stand by while
someone supports the pretensions of a car stereo company.
Altec is dead and gone. The remnants are two companies formed by ex Altec
employees, Great Plains Audio and Iconic manufacturing. The nice looking
prototypes that Alec shows were made by Great Plains and branded for them.
All Altec replacement diaphragms that Altec sells are made by Great Plains.
And no- they are NOT part of the company now calling itself Altec.
Just want to set the record straight. I don't think you intended to decieve-
please don't think that.

Are you saying that Altec outsourced my repairs to a third party without
informing me?
I doubt that was the case, as the most recent repairs were done in 1998-99,
and were definitely Altec factory parts and labor.
I’ve had some problems with Altec repairs in the 90s, and some drivers had
to go back twice because of voice coil rubs on full stroke.
These four drivers that I have and am selling one by one, are perfect in all
the important areas: the cones are perfect, the glue is in excellent shape,
and all are capable of a full stroke without scraping the voice coil. I
think it’s safe to state that their life expectancy is as good as can
possibly be.
Makes a little more sense- though I would personally not advertise a 7-8
year old recone as recent.
There is no Altec factory at that address, and hasn't been for some time.
the factory was sold off, just like the Altec name was.
What you have are very good speakers, and very collectable.
"Recent" is a relative concept. Depends on whether you were born just a few
years ago, or have been alive most of a century. :-) To me, 7-8 years seems
like a few months ago. Anyway, the speakers look as if they'd been reconed
yesterday. They're well-preserved in boxes and I doubt the years have made
any difference at all on their condition.
Interestingly, last winter, I sold two Altec 3182s that needed reconing, and
both of them bid well over $210 each. One buyer actually had me ship the
driver to Great Plains Audio for the recone, and then on to him from Great
Plains. I reckon these, in pristine condition, are worth much more,
especially due to their rareness. I've been watching eBay for two years, and
found no Altec 3184s ever.
I'm retired. I'm probably older than you.
And 8 years isn't recently reconed to me.
That is an excellent speaker though. I wish you well.
'Been retired for 21 years now. Enjoying the "golden" years now. Anything
after WWII seems "recent" to me. :-)
From one old fart to another, enjoy your retirement. There's an Altec user's
board, a google should bring it up. You may want to post them there.
Later,
Ah, Todd White's board, I presume? I'll take a look. Thanks.
