I have recently moved to Japan for a while from the UK, and have just bought
a Yamaha DSP-A1 DD/DTS home theater amplifier.

I currently only have a pair of elderly (actually pretty good) JBL TLX3
speakers, and of course need a few extra speakers to add to the collection.
A new main pair is the first priority so I can use the JBLs as rears. I want
a main pair that give pretty good audio quality, rather than just good sound
effects for films. The most plentiful speakers available here are Yamaha,
Onkyo, JBL and Tannoy (very expensive).

Can anyone recommend from experience what would go well with this amp, as
language makes the usual discussions about hi-fi in shops a little
difficult! A good starting point would be appreciated......

Thanks,

Owen.

Owen,

Currently, I am also using the Yamaha A1 as my AV Console, consider
the price and the packed features, the sound quality is very good.
Thus the Yamaha warrents a good set of speaker.

My current speaker setup as follow :

Main Speaker - B&W Nautilus 805
Centre Speaker - B&W HTM2 Nautilus
Sourround - KEF S60
Sub-woofer -KEF B30 - The weaker link in the chain, adquate for movie
and must be turned-off for stereo music to maintain a good muscial
tempo.

This speakers set up give a very good timbre matching and you can be
assured of very solid 3-D imaging & sound stage. I think the listed
price for the N805 in Japan is around YEN 300K plus another YEN 100K
for the matching stands. And It worths every penny and provide with a
future upgraded path for better amplifiers. You need to sand fill the
stand to obtain solid bass.

Althorugh this speaker is rated at 8 ohms, you would still set the
Yamaha speaker setting to 4ohms, otherwise, it could sound very
harsh..

Apart from this, I would recommend you to change the power cord, you
will be amused in the sound quality.

Hope this is helpful.

Hi!, I have the A2, and as the test point out they are alike.
I am using the kef model 2 as front speakers and the Q75 as rear speakers. My
centre speaker is the kef model 100.
Currently I am not using a sub.
I am really enjoyin this set, I also listened to the Canton THX-s 10 and also
liked it alot but was rather expensive.

Have a look at the nOrh speakers.
http://www.norh.com

I can recommend the nOrh 4.0 or the 5.1. These are very, very accurate
and good speakers for the money. They look good too. I haven't tried the
larger models yet. nOrh is a nice company to make business with and
internet shopping works very well in this case. UPS shipment is included
in the price and it only takes a few days to get the speakers delivered
at your door.

I can also recommend the ACI line of speakers. http://www.audioc.com

I have tried the Titan subwoofer, Emerald center and the Saphire III
monitors. nOrh seem to be better value though.

If I were to buy a new subwoofer today, I would probably have a look at
the HSU subs.
http://www.hsuresearch.com/

If you get one of those - be careful so you don't trigger a new
earthquake in Japan.

I was hoping for some cheaper options than this, although thanks for your
input....

I did buy the A1 with the intention of having a completely future-proof
amplifier, but for now my finances cannot stretch to the same (and more) for
a pair of speakers as for the amp itself (I only spent 190K Yen on the amp).

Does anyone have any personal experience of the Yamaha digital theater
speaker selection (NS-300. NS-200 or NS-C300)?

Owen,

Would suggest you to try out the following combinations :

The B&W DM 600 Series 2

Main speakers - DM602-S2 (2 ways, 2 drives) YEN 70K/pair
Centre - CC6-S2 (2 ways, 3 drives) YEN 45K/unit
Sourround - DM-601-S2 (2 ways, 2 drives) YEN 56K/pair
Total YEN 171K

This two-way combination should give you better sound quality than the
Yamaha. As the A-1 is relative cool-sounding, you need to balance the
sound with a warm-sounding speakers. Imaging and sound quality is
suprisingly good.

In term of pricing, this combination is similar to the Yamaha. (NS
300/YEN96K, NS-C300/YEN 45K)

Anyway, try to compare the B&W & Yamaha before you make the
investment.

To improve the sound-qulaity for music replay, try to replace the
pre-out jumpers with some decent signal connect. In Japan, you can
easily some good cable making by Hitachi/Meltone, at a minimum cost.
Audio Quest Tapaz II is good alternative as well.
