Hello there,

I am the lucky owner of a NAD 5420 CD player. Unfortunately the display went
completely blank although all the functions are still working correctly.

Did you encounter similar problems with this audio device?
Can you give me pointers on how to solve this problem myself?
Can I get my hands on the design of this device and the layout diagram of
the printed circuit board?

Bart,
i have a 5425 which is the exact same model with a remote. this is a known
defect with the NAD display and I just never bothered to get it fixed. In
my case, it is intermittent. for some reason, whenever i move, it works in
the new location for a little while and then stops working. NAD makes great
stuff, i have the CD and a 304 integrated amp, but a lot of people will tell
you NAD stands for "nearly always defective". Just wanted you to know you
are not alone!

Indeed it is.
The problem is, getting access to the bulb.

Don't know about the 5420, but my NAD 502 CD Player had the bulbs blown
after I transported it to my new house. In that unit, at the back of the
display was a plastic cover, like a housing, that kept the area behind the
display dark, only illuminated by the 2 bulbs. Removing that cover by
removing some screws got me to the bulbs, which were easily desoldered and
replaced with new ones. If you're not sure of the voltage ratings of the
bulb, just probe the PCB connections with a voltmeter and you should have
it. My was a 12V bulb.

Hope this is not irrelevant.

It's a pain but if you think of anything to go wrong, this one is at
least,harmless.

I wouldn't fiddle to much with it and think about replacing it in a
while.

How do their Pre_amps rate ? Specifically the pro monitor series and
amp circa 1989 ?

The A/B switch on the amp is a little forgetful of whether it's on or
not :)

B switch is fine ( thank god )other than that both pieces work great.

Any Pre-amp suggestions in $1000 range would be appreciated . (G)

Chris,

You were right. It took the Dutch NAD dealer less than 1 second to come-up
with the same solution that you described. It appears to be a "known bug".

Thanks for your help,
