People are often asking on newsgroups where to get Dolby Digital, DTS and
THX trailers on DVD.

Some may already know of this but there is an excellent book available
called "DVD Demystified" by Jim Taylor. This book is now up to the 2nd
Edition and it comes with a DVD containing many useful trailers and test
patterns: Here is a selection of what is on the disc:

Dolby Digital Aurora Trailer, Dolby Digital Rain Trailer, Dolby Digital
Train Trailer
Dolby Digital Canyon Trailer, Dolby Digital Egypt Trailer, Dolby Digital
City Trailer
Dolby Digital Game Trailer, Dolby Headphone Demo, DTS Digital Experience
Trailer
DTS Sonic Landscape Trailer, The Eagles: New York Minute Music Video (DTS)
THX Grand Trailer, THX TEX Trailer, THX TEX 2: Moo Can Trailer (Surround EX)
THX Optimode (test sequences)

A full list of the contents of this disc are available at:
http://www.dvddemystified.com/disc.html

Book details: DVD Demystified 2nd Edition by Jim Taylor
ISBN: 0071350268

The book itself is a pretty good read, has lots of useful info spanning
nearly 700 pages.

NB: One person in the USA has been auctioning this information on ebay.com!
He has been taking bids from people just to tell you which book to buy.
Last week the bid was up to $40!
This link is a current auction by the same person - has some screen shots
from the disc:

I hope this information is useful to some people. I personally like the
disc just for the THX Grand trailer (previously not released to the public
anywhere!).

Sorry for the length of this post - I think I've gone on too long....

Cheers

Phil

The DTS and Dolby Digital trailers listed are available from a number of
other sources as well. The Dolby Digital Demo DVD "We've Got the Whole
World Listening" is a bargain at $15 --when it is available for order from
Dolby Labs' store. Sometimes the item is out of stock.

The two DTS trailers (Digital Experience and Sonic Landscape) can both be
found on any number of DVDs featuring DTS. Just watch the past two Best
Picture Oscar winning films ("American Beauty" and "Gladiator") in DTS and
you'll see both trailers, although the flying disc and piano clips probably
should have been switched around for those two titles.

DVD Demystified has three THX clips, but that is not nearly all of the
trailers. Of the clips featured on DVD Demystified, "Tex" and "Tex 2: Moo
Can" can also be found on "The Ultimate Toy Box" 3-disc set of Toy Story
films. The THX "Grand" trailer is not commercially available on any other
DVD.

DVD Demystified is missing the awesome THX "Cimarron" trailer. That's the
one featuring an orchestra conductor's hand launching the viewer through a
tunnel of lights on into a red, starry area where a big, chrome THX logo
flys past. The classic "Broadway" trailer is also missing (this one is
longer than the THX Digital Mastering redo of "Broadway" often seen on THX
certified DVDs). The THX "Simpsons" trailer is also missing, which is a
shame since the clip is pretty funny. "Broadway 2000" (the newest THX
trailer) is also absent. Finally, I don't know if the first THX trailer
"Wings" has ever been reproduced on Laserdisc or DVD.

I have VOB files with DD 5.1 sound of all the THX theatrical clips. It
would be nice to have them all on a real THX Demo DVD.

But is it really worth $40 bucks for a book and a DVD w/ demos? I have
seriously thought about buying this book, but have found it very hard to
find. What can you tell me about the book that will make me want to run out
the door and buy it. I need some new info. Thanks.

Amazon.com has it. Found a link from the DVD Demystified page. Amazon
wants $36 plus shipping.

I have every DD, DTS, THX Trailer as VOB. Play them through SPDIF to my amp.
Great audio, just a shame the visuals are on my monitor.

I looked into creating a mini-dvd with them all on, but there are hardly any
DVD players that can play-back mini-did (DVD content on CDR) since the
data-rate on CD is too slow for DVD content. Apparently it is possible, but
it means modifying your DVD transport.

A little extreme me-thinks.
I'd love to have all these on a DVD. Perhaps it might be possible when DVD-R
becomes more mainstream (and cheaper!).
