I have a 1994 Honda 300ex with a starting problem.

All of a sudden, the quad will not start. The battery is new,
connections good. Power through the solenoid. Starter just clicks just
like a bad battery, but the lights shine bright.

The odd thing is that once in a while, usually after running it for a
while, it will restart with the starter, but it drags.

New starters seem like they are around $230. Can the starter be fixed
cheaper? Is there a source for rebuilt starters? Seems like it is easy
to pull the starter off. Am I right? Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks.
steve.

I am no ATV mechanic so somebody else can probably tell you for sure, but I
had a 'stator' go bad in my JetSki one time and it had all the symptons that
you described.....good battery, good connections, starter would just click
and every now and then it would turnover and start up. I ended up having it
replaced and it has worked ever since.

A stator for a 300EX runs $163 in the magazine I have in front of me. So I
would check to make sure it is not the stator that is causing the problem
before replacing the starter.

Again, I am no ATV mechanic so you may have already checked all this stuff.
Just throwing out ideas. :-)

Check your starter switch on your handlebar....... thats the cheapest
place to start!!!! (they go bad too!)

Starters aren't that hard to work on really. Mine had the same problem. I
ended up replacing the brushes and generally cleaning it up. I thought they
were easy to replace and it was only the first time I took an electric motor
apart. The brushes were like 50 cents a pop. I figure I got the same
results as a new starter, only 160 bucks cheaper. ;-)

Oh, before you take the starter apart, make double sure the lead connecting
to the charger has 12 volt's of juice. Just to make sure the problem isn't
that wire or something else up the line.

Mine will occasionally do this. I "fix" it by rolling it and popping the
clutch with it in gear. Then the electric start works fine
