I would like to get some info on the Blaster from the people that have one.
I'm getting pressure from my son to buy one. We have a Polaris Sportsman
500 witch I think is a lot of fun...but my son feels it's a big ol cow.
Anyway, I would like to know if the Blaster will be the machine he is
looking for. He is 5'10" 175 lbs. Riding areas are grassy and dirt fields,
and wooded trails.

any information Pro and Con
Thanks

I've had and ridden a number of quads from a Yamaha Wolverine (4wd), Yamaha
Banshee, Yamaha Warrior, Suzuki Quadracer 250 and 500. I've yet to ride a
Honda 250R which IS the standard for 2 stroke sport quads. But in
comparison to what I have ridden, I really love my little Yamaha Blaster.
I'm the same size and weight as your son. The little Blaster is a wheelie
machine, light, pretty quick (stock), flickable, easy maintenance. It is
essentially unchanged since its inception in 1988. We still ride with the
350 4 stroke Wolverine, and The Blaster smokes it through all the gears,
except up top.

The problems that a Yamaha Blaster has (why the factory hasn't addressed
these problems since 1988, I do not know...)

FRONT BRAKES BITE!!!!! The Blaster uses front drum brakes and are ALWAYS
the first to go.
Shocks are in need of a good upgrade (preferably from the factory, but
aftermarket shocks are available for a price $$$). The stock shocks simply
don't do it with larger jumps.
Also a limiting factor is the narrow frame layout, which is great in the
tight woods!! But it could really limit you in the whoops and fast 180
degree sweepers.
The ride simply isn't as plush as say a Yamaha Wolverine, But I personally
like that because the bike looks for more rider finesse to handle properly.
With that said, you'll be sure to get a better workout when riding a
Blaster.

There are lots of aftermarket go fast goodies for the Blaster and believe it
or not, OEM factory parts are cheap enough. I recommend fully. Fun
inexpensive fun. Hope this helps.

Good luck ATV hunting.

Joe

Get a 2003 Blaster - they upgraded to all hydralic disk brakes - this
was the weaklink and now its Fixed. He will love it - (till its
Banshee time a few years from now).
