Hi,

I am looking for a reliable ATV that have enough power to tow my jetskis to
the launch ramp. I would prefer an ATV with 4-stroke engine. Thanks in
advance for any pointers...

-Steve

Just curious why not just back up your vehicle to the launch ramp? It'll
save ya about $5000

any utility type 4 wheel drive will do
the 2 wheel drive might not have the traction
to pull a loaded trailer out of the water
<depending one the surface of the ramp>
most utility type quads start at 300cc and go up.
while bigger engines are nice when the quad is
in 1st gear usually the limiting factor is traction not HP.
look carefully at the parking brake options
on the ones you are considering.

Pay attention to the ATV manufacturer's rated towing capacity for each model
you look at. Some have tow ratings as low as 300lbs, which may not be near
enough to pull a jetski and trailer up a ramp. You don't say if you have a
single or double trailer either. The Arctic Cat line has very good tow
ratings, generally over 1000lbs for all of their quads over 375cc's.

I have a Yahama Big Bear 4x4 utility quad that I routinely use to pull
trailers or whatever. The big concern is the tongue weight. If the load is
to heavy, it may damage the axel. You may also want to think about putting
a winch on the front, in the off chance you can't get traction. You also
can use the winch to pull the trailer out, if you can't get it out with the
quad.

I live in Southern California and the jetskis are located in my vacation
home on the Colorado river. We have a private boat launch but it would be
easier to drive my little Honda out there instead of an SUV and use an ATV
to launch these skis. I am thinking about putting a hitch on my Honda but
it would be more fun with an ATV :-)

Thanks for all your pointers. I am new to ATV, what do I need to look for
when I am ready to buy a used ATV? Thanks for any help...

Not that several ATVs couldn't do it, but why don't you just get yourself an
old beater Jeep or other 4x4 and just leave it there. Probably cheaper than
an ATV with enough power to get your trailer out. Just an idea.

You're not talking about Martinez Lake by any chance?

Hell, if you've got enough cash in your pocket to buy a quad to use to
back your jetskis in the water, then why don't you send some of that
stuff over to me and I can have a quad. I dont even have one :( I am
14 and quadless...

TJ,

My advice to you is to do well in school, make plan to go to college, get a
good job. There will be plenty of toys waiting for you....

I recommend the Sportsman 700. It has 1500lbs towing capacity. Its the
most towing capacity i've seen on any atv.

I second that. college + job = toys. :)

The only problem I have is there are soo many toys I want, and all of them
cost soo much. So you still have the problem of not getting ALL the toys
you want, but at least you can get some of the toys you want. And before
anyone says I need a better paying job so I can afford all the toys I want.
I am an engineer for the last 8 years, and I make $80K/year. Its just the
darn mortgage is too much.
