I just aquired a 220 Bayou.

Will start with pull start.

New battery.

Turn key, dash lights up.

Push start button, nothing. No click, no dimming of the lights, no
nothing.

So I removed the seat, bridged the solenoid with a screwdriver and the
starter engaged, albiet did not turn over more that twice.

I'll be putting the charger on the battery tonight for a trickle charge.

Am I looking at a bad solinoid? Or something else? I checked the "start"
button inside and it's good. I disassembled the key switch and it's
good. I checked all the connections I could find without taking ALL the
plastic off (except the front hood and seat).

Could this still be a starter issue?

I had the same problem with my Bayou 220!. Tried everything, turned out too
be just the battery. You might want to check your ground wire from the
battery to the engine case.

But I have lights! I'll look anyway.

Jeepers,

I just bought a used 1999 two weeks ago. I ordered a service manual for it.
According to the manual, you should check for the following things.

1. Neutral switch trouble
2. Starter motor problems
3. Battery voltage low
4. Relays not contacting or operating
5. Starter button not contacting
6. Wiring open or shorted
7. Ignition switch trouble
8. Engine stop switch trouble
9.Fuse blown

Starting the Engine:

1. Turn the fuel tap to the "On" position
2. Engine stop switch is in the "RUN' position
3. Turn the iginition switch on
4. Make sure the transmission is in neutral. The green neutral light should be
lit
5. Push the starter button

Wow! Thanks! I really appreciate finding this, this morning!

Last night I went at it with a test meter and a battery charger. I did
resistance tests along the harness.

I dimantled the key switch, it checked out.
I dimantled the starter switch, it checked out.
I dimantled the starter solenoid, it checked out.
I dimantled a relay, next the the solenoid, it was corroded.

I cleaned it up with some emery cloth and reassembled.

I don't have a choice in takeing these apart as a replacement is 2 hours
away, I live rurally.

Anyway, I got it to turn over. But it didn't have enough Oompf to start
it. BUT, I have doubts about the battery the last owner threw at it in
hopes of solving the problem. It's new, but it's a Wal-Mart Everstart. I
don't know if I have a way of finding out what amp it is. I know what
battery it NEEDS. So, today I'll pull the battery from my old Quadrunner
and try it. It could still have solenoid or relay troubles, those little
sealed gizmos don't like to be taken apart.

Sounds like the battery! I bought one from Wal-Mart for mine works just fine. It
puts out around 14 volts fully charged. If your solenoid is bad the atv will start
when shorted across the terminals. I live out in the boone docks myself, but a
Wal-Mart
is just about 12 miles away. Hope all this helped you out, good luck!!!

23 miles for us.

I swapped out that battery and it's ok in my quadrunner.

Next time I go to The Big City I'll pick up a new solenoid and relay.

Thanks!

more than likely it's the relay located by the solenoid, it's round with a 4
pin connector.

That's exactly what it was. But...

... I had broken the solenoid cracking it open... $80!!!

The starter sounds kinda weak too, after the replacement parts get here
I'll check the starter again.

Thanks!

I have a 1996 Kawasaki 300 Bayou,
new out of the box(the bayou), the solenoid (looking thru from
the rear of the vehicle) is mounted on the battery box.
This small solenoid has a cable into it. The cable was too
short and over time would wiggle out, just enough to lose contact.
This happen three years ago ... my fix was to "glue" with RTV silcone
the connector to the solenoid ... has not happen since.

Lately I had to pull the starter and clean out the junk (debris) inside the
starter next
to the spring loaded brushes.
This is the gearhead that is mounted on the starter. This was last year and
so
far everything is well.

Hope this helps,
Randy

I'll bet my starter has the same problem.

I got a 1985 bayou 185cc. Starts with pull start
Doesn't start with push start
New starter, starter solenoid and relay.
I did have a blow fuse and replaced with a 30amp one which is higher than the 20amp that was in there. Could that be the problem or something else I'm not finding
