I go by the amount of valve noise the bike is making, if it's sounding a little
loud, I check and adjust them.. I use a regular feeler gauge & bend it a
little to fit in the head better.

Intake .004"
Exhaust .005"

Motion Pro sells a nice little adjuster feeler guage that fits right into the
tight space of the valve cover. It's about $5-$6 and works great. Intake is
.004" and Exhaust is.005". The guage has one thickness on one end and the
other thickness on the other end.
