Thanks!
Do her a favor and buy her a Yamaha Kodiak 450. Blows a Polaris out of the
water any day of the week and it's also the perfect size for a woman.
Cheaper too I bet.
Alex.
She's driven a Kodiak and wasn't impressed. We have a long history of
owning products from Yamaha and Honda, but both of us really like way
the Polaris ATV's are built, how they drive, and how their controls are
arranged. She particularly didn't like the shifter arrangement on the
Yamaha.
Her only complaint - and it's not a huge one - is that my 700 feels
just a bit too large in the seat. I haven't asked, but I'm guessing
she'd rather keep everything she likes about Polaris than give it all
up for a (presumably) more comfortable Yamaha seat.
Who knows, adjusting the handlebars might take care of things on the
Polaris. We haven't tried that.
Why do you think a Yamaha would "blow a Polaris out of the water"?
They're both strong machines from good companies.
.....and they won't be blown out of the water by anything Yamaha makes.
ATV's are so close now that nothing is drastically better than anything else
really.

I don't have any numbers at hand, but I know Polaris quads are HEAVY. Heavy
is good for work, but heavy is not good for recreation. It's also
increasingly dangerous when the rider is smaller/lighter (ie: most females).
I know the difference between the Yam 660 and the Polaris 700 is 150
pounds... Heck, that's an extra rider!!!
Also, the 4x4 system Polaris uses is in my opinion more problematic than
ingenious. Having control over your traction is paramount when 4x4 ridding
and not being able to control or even predict how the 4x4 system is going to
handle certain obstables (ex: going down a high incline slippery slope)
makes such a system dangerous.
... Well OK I give it to you, you CAN predict how the Polaris 4x4 system
will handle. It will either force you to find lighter obstables or make
everything you tackle more dangerous.
If Polaris had a full 4x4 or even 3x4 lock override it wouldn't be so bad,
but the current system is not something I would ever want on a quad I ride.
I'd be dead by now if I had a Polaris.
Alex.
They are heavy. No doubt. But they are made from heavy guage steel, and have
great skid protection, right from the factory. Better than anyone else in
that aspect. If they're too heavy for you, then stay off. I would never let
my daughter or small nephews ride my bigger ATVs.

I've been riding Polaris for 21 years now, with zero problems from the 4X4
system, I did replace one speedo, one starter, and several sets of brake
pads though. I've never had any of the belt issues that every one talks
about. Not once, not ever. I'm not wild about the EBS system, but I learned
to use it, and am happy with it. During that time, I have also owned Yamaha,
Suzuki, Kawasaki, and a Honda.

I tend to think that if you spend enough time in the saddle of any ATV, you
will learn to ride it, but you can't get off one type of ATV and immediately
ride another as well.

They do have one of the best 4X4 systems out there, but like anything else,
you have to be familiar with it in order to use it properly.
.....and just so you know I was addressing the statement you made "blown
away", because I don't think any quads out there right now, within the same
classes, are so good that one just "blows all the others away". I think the
quality and capability between brands is pretty close right now.
Most every manufacturer has a good quad out there now.

bear in mind, right now this just applies to the x2, but i expect it to
cover the entire sportsman line eventually.
