Can anyone tell me if there are any good public or private ATV trails in
WNY?

With the way NY is about ATV'ers, you'd do better looking for a local ATV
club in your area and joining it as opposed to trying to run on unknown
trails risking damn near harassment from authorities when they spot you. I
do know that there was an awesome ATV ride every year in Salamanca NY but
not sure if it's still a go now or not. ATV riding in NY is tough to do if
there's no clubs in your immediate area....even then it's not guaranteed
you'll have access to prime riding areas, sucks period! A free country??
BawaHahahaha!!!

Salamanca is WAY too crowded. A good ride, and that's probably why it's so
crowded.....

The Icon would agree - looking for a club is the best way to go. Or try to
buddy up with the local landowners.

Let it be a lesson - make sure you have somewhere to ride before you buy!

Be cool,

A chilling yet very accurate remark. We are losing places to ride all over
the country. And the areas that are being converted to pedestrian or bicycle
only are rarely used by anybody. My quad spends more time in the garage then
it does on the trails simply because it's a minimum 45 minute ride by
vehicle to access nearby public OHV trails.

Hey - take a trick from the snowmobilers book - ORGANIZE!! They get tax
dollars to maintain snowmobile trails while ATVers get the shaft. Figure it
out......

Hmmm, maybe a statewide, unified ATV group?? That would be something.

You might try to find or create a statewide organization. I know the
snowmobilers lobbyists have dazzled the NYS legislature with the financial
contributions of snowmobiling so effectively that when the insurers
discontinued insurance coverage for groomers then Governor Pataki personally
stepped in to negotiate a settlement. However, in general snowmobilers hate
ATVs (they mess up snowmobile trails) and will not support any legislative
efforts on behalf of ATVers. In fact, they will at times work against them.

In NY there are plenty of snowmobile trails. A snowmobile is defined as
"steers with skis" regardless of how it is propelled. And once an ATV,
always an ATV, so you can't put skis and tracks on an ATV and make it a
snowmobile for he purposes of using snowmobile trails. Since the industry
is poorly organized in NY, but a lot of abuses (damage, trespass, vandalism)
have already occurred, there are no state owned trails open to ATVs that I
am aware of, and getting there politically is a huge uphill push given the
history. But without an organized membership, I'd suggest it will never
happen. Getting a NY ATV organization going, securing significant funding,
and working on image education will all be required.

boring. If I want I can drive 1 hour north and there are some trails but the
best ones are 3.5 hours away.

A unified effort is only as good as the people (officers) running it. We
have this in Maine and it sucks. The people in charge are a bunch of idiots,
look out for their own best interests, not those of the industry as a whole.
We have +/-200 unified clubs...Some have 15 members, some have 300+. We tell
the mob (Our little lobbying group, sanctioned by the state) what we want.
They look down their noses at us and do what they want. The right
individuals in charge, 'organizing' is a beautiful thing... wrong people in
charge of the effort? A travesty.
