Hi guys,

After 12 years of improper storage (but indoors) I rebuilt the carb on
my 110 (plus a load
of other stuff.) I cleaned it out by soaking it in carb cleaner for a
week. Bought a gasket
set & a new slow jet cuz the old one was buggered. Now with the bike
all together and
gas tank clean with new gas and new fuel lines it will start like a
charm and idle like new,
but hit the gas and it sputters. The idol is great and starts on the
first pull. I can adjust the
idol screw and that all works, the screw for the mixture setting if
off though. I can crank
that all the way in and the engine will pick up a few hundred RPM's,
then back it all the
way out and the engine drops to normal speed, keep turning it and
nothing till you actually
remove the screw from the carb and the engine will stall. The exhaust
is black all the time
indicating to rich. What can I do? I need some tips from the carb
guys out there!!!

Have you checked the the choke isn't on, that the air filter is CLEAN
and not over oiled? Do some tests, like removing the air filter to see
if it will rev the way it should (very short test, though).

Just had a problem like that on my CT 70. Turns out it wasn't getting enough
air and when I shifted the airbox cover a little(so it was actually opened a
little bit) the machine would run perfect. So I took one boot off the airbox
to allow better airflow and it works, not a correct repair but functional.
My air-screw wouldn't do much of anything either so I suspect it's worn out.

It could be one of the following things:

1 For proper setting for your carb (I am assuming that it is a Honda)
carefully turn the pilot screw (the one without the spring around it) in
until it seats lightly (dont crank it in or it is toast!) and then back it
out 1 1/8 turns out.

2 It could be your float is in need of adjustment. If your float is plastic
you can not adjust it adjusting it will break it, you will have to buy a new
if it is out of adjustment, but if it is metal then you can. On metal floats
adjust by carefully bending the tang on the float arm. If the float is set
too high, the result will be a rich mixture. If it is set too low than it
will be too lean. The float level should be 10.7mm (0.43 in) (the distance
in movement that the float goes up and down)

3 On your needle jet (this is the located where the throttle cable goes
into the top of the carb, by unscrewing the cap the whole assembly comes
out) the clip should be located on the second groove on the needle.

4 Your choke flap could be stuck slightly closed.

5 Your air filter could be dirty.

Hope this helps you

I have a similar problem and am following the same path you are
although my symptoms are not as severe as yours are. Which carburetor
is this? The old standard Keihin with the brass dual-pontoon float? In
a severe case like yours I would wonder if the float valve is leaking
or if the main jet is wrong. My understanding is that the throttle
needle clip should be moved around until the mixture is correct. I am
told the air-screw only affects the mixture at idle.

I wish there was some sort of drip hole that would let you know if the
float valve was ever leaking.

Hey,

I have a new OEM air filter, new OEM float valve, new slow OEM jet and
all new OEM gaskets. I will try the air lid thing and see what
happens. If no go then I will take her apart and see how much more $$
I can spend.

Will post back.

Thanks.

OK..it's a 1983 honda act 110. It is 100% OEM.

I pulled the air filter off and that cured 50% of the problem, must of
been a little over oiled. But still it smokes, but now it smokes
white. Still starts great and idiles great but bags out when reved
and will not run great when held at a high RPM. This is all I have to
fix, got the brakes 100%, bearings 100%, creamed the tank and new
fenders, new handel bars and headlight glass.

I have a new OEM plug and cap on this bike. Tell me how to set the
timing on this beater, I don't have a manual but I have a timing
light!

compression reading?

I have no idea, no tool for that at my place. I ordered the other jet
and put it in, made a huge difference. I had let the old jets sit in
carb cleaner for a week!!
