I bought a 2000 Big Bear 4x4 about two months ago. I'm having one problem
with it. When I am in reverse and shift up, sometimes (most of the time) it
will skip neutral and go directly to first, but sometimes it won't. The
amount of pressure put on the shift lever has no effect on this. It is
TERRIBLY hard to shift out of reverse, even on level ground. Also,
sometimes it jerks very hard when shifted into reverse or first. This is
very aggravating. Has anyone else had this problem? I am still under
warranty, and I'm sure this should be covered.

I also have a 2000 Big Bear 4X4 about two months old. It does the same
thing. I really just consider it part of the nature of the beast and
don't worry about it. I have a 2000 Honda Rancher ES, 4X4 and it has
some shifting problems which I don't consider worthy of worry. If either
machine had problems which I thought would get worse with age, I would
take them to the shop and claim warrenty repairs, but I don't believe
the problems will get worse with either machine.

Enjoy your Big Bear. Its a great machine.

If yo consider it really a problem take it to the shop and let your warranty
deal with it.

I guess it is just a characteristic. I called the Yamaha shop and the guy
there said "they'll do that." He pretty much said that all of them were
that way. He recommended getting the clutch adjusted when I take it to get
the valves adjusted for the first time. He said it might not fix it, but it
might make it a little better. But, even with this flaw, I'm still very
pleased with the Big Bear 4x4.

same thing with every big bear with the twist and shift method of reverse..
MY way is is instaed of stopping dead before shifting.. keep a little
reverse movement going and pull up into 1st or nutral... hold the shifter up
all the way until it stops rolling (just a second) then let it down. Works
on my 99.

Same here too, I found that shifting while still moving backwards helps,
but from a stop its hard. I like the one about the nature of the beast .

While I still believe it is the nature of the beast, it can also be a
pain in the rear. The other morning I hopped on my big bear and couldn't
get it out of reverse even by getting off and trying to pull it out of
reverse by hand. I back my ATV up to my boat trailer at night for
storage. I thought that if I just goose it a little in reverse maybe it
will then shift okay. I goosed it a little to hard and found my big bear
rear end suspended on top of the boat trailer tongue. I was right. It
shifted fine after that. I don't recommend it, but it works.

I just got my Bear back from the shop today. I had the clutch adjusted, and
from the little bit that I got to ride it, the problem seems to be fixed.
Its shifts very easily and doesn't skip neutral anymore (so far).
