I'm new to Atlanta and my new dentist wants to charge me $845 for a
crown. That's about twice as much as my last crown, which I had done
in Texas. Is this the going rate around here or is this a ripoff?

Thanks,

Brad

I don't remember whether the price I paid included the discount from the
insurance but I thought it was $600. Also, probably depends on which tooth.
I can recommend Dr. Ashendorf near Northlake Mall. Since you're new in town
might be worthwhile to get competing bids.

that sound high, but to ask "how much is a crown" is like asking "how much
is a car"... That is, there are a LOT of possible differences and materials.
E.G.- full gold, porcelain, ceramic gold, nonprecious, veneer, porcelain
jacket.... which tooth? big molar or little lower central? Root canal? if so
youl need a post. See? Just the crown can cost the dentist $75 - $300 +
Remember that a crown is made exactly like a piece of fine jewelery.. So how
much would you expect to pay for a custom white gold cliosonae (sp?) ring?
But.. still the Dentist charges more for his work than the crown costs, so
thats where you can save money. The cheapest crowns are a non-precious PJC.
Remember that if you are repairing damage to an anterior tooth (front) you
can often get by with Acrylic UV bonding for about 1/5 the price of a crown.

The below poster has it right, a difficult decision to make,
and you need to ask many questions. We went through many
destists before we settled on the one we have now. There are so
many bad ones in Atlanta, ready to drain your wallet for crap work.
Boy, I could post the names of all the bad experiences we had, but
I won't do that, instead let me just post the name of the guy who we
go to now. We think he is the best of the best!
Dr. Kirk Kimmerling in West Marietta. 770-423-4900

Another thing you can do is ask for recommendtions from your
friends, coworkers, neighbors, at church, etc. You get the picture.
Good Luck.

You might try calling Comprehensive Dentistry on Chamblee-Dunwoody Road. Dr.
Barton is a very good dentist AND they are also oral surgeons which means that
they will not make you drive across town to another dentist. They are very
reasonable and I have been quite pleased with them.
