I'm one of the poor souls that cannot get ADSL or cable (actually, adsl is
available in my neighborhood but my phone lines dont support it according to
bellsouth :( ). Anyway, since I'm stuck waiting 10-12 more months for cable
can someone recommend a local isp that provides reliable/fast internet
access (404/770 area code). Earthlink is what I've been using but they're
getting worse and worse by the month..

Thanks, Chris

If your telephone lines are degraded,
it won't matter who your dial-up ISP is.
You will get low connect/throughput rates.

i hear Mindspring is pretty good....BellSouth
is okay.

An expensive alternative is ISDN

Definitely give MindSpring a shot. I have used CompuServ, AOL, Netcom,
and Bellsouth.net. I wish I had started off with MindSpring years ago.
I live in an apartment complex in Marietta and get connected on the
first try all the time, and never have my connection dropped.

When I used Bellsouth, the connection seemed to drop every 15 minutes,
and I experienced EXTREMELY slow response times. I have used the same
modem and PC with all the providers listed above (a 486 PC upgraded to
a Pentium overdrive processor and a 28.8 modem.) MindSpring's Internet
service has given me the most reliable, fastest connection I've
experienced.

Also, I believe MindSpring actually CARES about its network. They
routinely update a page linked directly to the MindSpring home page
that tells you the current network status. These same postings appear
in the newsgroup mindspring.alerts. When I used Bellsouth, I couldn't
even FIND a network status page on their web site.

By the way, if you use Windows 95 with a modem connection to the
Internet, you will get a 50% to 300% improvement in download speeds if
you change the registry settings affecting packet and frame size.
Windows 95 comes with default settings for LAN connections, not
Internet connections. You can use a free utility such as EasyMTU to
automatically adjust the settings. I HIGHLY (HIGHLY!) recommend you
use it. You will not believe the difference in performance with a
modem connection compared to the speed you got with the default
registry settings. (NOTE: If you have Windows 98, I believe Microsoft
changed the default settings to optimize modem connections.)

To optimize your registry settings for modem connections with Windows
95, you can download the FREE utility EasyMTU from the following site:

http://members.tripod.com/~EasyMTU/easymtu/index.html
http://members.tripod.com/~EasyMTU/easymtu.zip

You can learn more about tuning your Windows Internet connection by
reading the stuff at this good WINSOCK TUNING site:

Good Luck!

I use Future Services, located in Stone Mountain. They are a small ISP with
about 2K members. I use a 56K modem and I never have problems connecting.
No signup fee and it costs about 18 a month. Look at their webpage
www.atlcom.net They're nice folks and small which I like.
