Barnes of the Morning X on 99X is outta here
By RODNEY HO
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Steve Barnes is exiting the Morning X for the bright lights of Hollywood.
Barnes, a 36-year-old Corpus Christi native, has been a key part of the durably
successful 99X morning team of Barnes, Leslie & Jimmy for nearly a decade. He
said Monday afternoon that he's going to Los Angeles to star in a film called
"No Witness" for Green Valley Entertainment, which has offices in Atlanta.(A
nine-minute short version of the film is already in the can.)
"I've been acting part-time for 13 years," Barnes said. "It's always been in my
system. I'd be mad at myself if I passed this up."
Barnes, whose contract with 99X is up in March, said he's been auditioning for
parts for several months in Hollywood, fueling rumors in Atlanta radio of his
impending departure for much of this year.
"He has an amazing physical and screen presence to play a bad guy," said Michael
Valverde, a director for Green Valley.
His last day on air is Friday. "I don't want any fanfare" about my departure, he
said. "That's not my style. I don't want the attention focused on me." He said
he will play a farewell song, though he won't say what it will be.
Barnes has had small roles in films such as "Losing Grace" and "Remember the
Titans." He hosted a tennis show earlier this year on Fox Sports Net with Luke
Jensen. Now that he's pursuing acting full time, he said he's hoping to focus on
dramatic roles, though hosting a reality show could happen, too. "I'm not the
comedy skit guy," he said. "I'm not into sitcoms."
It's still unclear who's going to replace Barnes at 99X. Possibilities include
night-time jock Fred Toucher, Morning X associate producer Christopher Calandro
and former Morning X stunt guy Rich Shertenlieb. His two Morning X partners,
Leslie Fram and Jimmy Baron, are expected to stay for now. Baron re-upped his
contract last week but he wouldn't say the length of it.
The Morning X was one of the top-rated alternative rock morning shows in the
country throughout the 1990s, drawing a wide swath of fans from teens to
35-year-olds. The trio's diverse personalities clicked.
Barnes played the cranky ringleader, running a tight ship, making sure
interviews ran on time and bits didn't run too long. He balanced the neurotic
Baron and the sensible Fram, as well as sidekicks such as gay man Bob and
traffic reporter Crash Clark.
"He's been the straight man," said Neil Roberts, a 38-year-old information
technology systems analyst from Sandy Springs. "He showed the most intelligence.
But he whined a lot. I felt if you weren't on his page, you were off his page."
Barnes' personal assessment: "I've been the realist. I've never pulled any
punches."
With increasing competition and complaints that the show's sparkle has dimmed,
99X has lost some of its listeners in the past three years. But it still remains
a solid no. 4 among 18- to 34-year-olds in the latest Arbitron ratings.
