I'm fairly new here to Atlanta. Does anyone know where to get some
really GOOD barbeque? Name of establishment and location, please?

There's not any. People in Georgia like to pour Karo surup and Brown
sugar into something they mix with tomatoe sauce and other things they
call Bar-Be-Que sauce and baste in on the meat and pour it all over
the meat when it's in the sandwich. There are plenty of places that
cook the meat until it's nice and pink, even using real Hickory wood
and maybe even Mesquite for Texas style, than they ruin it by basking
and soaking it in Karo Surup and Brown Sugar confectionary mix which
is about the same thing as pouring snowcone surup all over the
Bar-Be-Que. They don't believe in using vinegar-based bastes and
suaces and vigorously argue against any type of vinegar baste or even
sometimes vinegar based hot sauces. For the majority of the
Bar-Be-Que, and the people who eat Bar-be-Que in the Southeastern
United States and elsewhere, this is odd and most others consider the
people who eat it this way to be oddballs. But some people in Georgia
love to argue with the majority of other Bar-Be-Que connoisseurs
telling them the Old Hickory House sauce of extremely sweet Karo Surup
and Brown suagr "snowcone" surup on their meat is the only way to go.
If you want real Bar-Be-Que, go to Memphis, Mississippi, some parts of
Alabama or North Carolina, buy 200 pounds of it and freeze it in your
home freezer. They know what vinegar really is and how it's properly
used.

jack... they make decaf, y'know.

I like Daddy D'z on memorial, east of downtown but west of Boulevard. I
also like Stubb's, but have never gone there, just had some at a Bar they
were catering for. Some folks have said good things about Factory's, just
south of I-20 on Boulevard, across from the BP.

There was a joint in town called Feeders that closed down, and I am sad to
this day.

One place lots of people go is:

DUSTY'S BARBECUE
1815 Briarcliff Road. 404-320-6264.
There's nothing quite like starting out the day with barbeque for
breakfast. Dusty's is an award-winning BBQ haven by day and serves up
a mean breakfast too. The Chattahoochee Wake-Up features a three egg
omelet stuffed with tangy barbecue - pork, beef or chicken -- and is
served with homefries or grits and your choice of toast or a biscuit.
There's plenty of lighter omelets too, plus great yellow grits, light
and fluffy pancakes plus home-made pork sausage that's lightly spiced
with chili flakes and sage. This is the place for the breakfast of
champions.

Another place lots of people go is Fat Matt's Rib Shack.

Below are some comments both good and bad about it.

a corner of the stage to get to the men's bathroom. Recommend it for
dinner over lunch so you can enjoy beer and the great bands. A little
heavy for lunch time fare-plus there is a very good chance you'll get
rib sauce on your clean white business shirt. " -- rudepolice,

"When I moved here from Oklahoma, I thought there were no good rib

Hahaha...I think you're right...I've had BBQ from a couple places here
and it was NOT it. I'm from Wisconsin and we know about the vinegar base
which is truly what I'm looking for.
Thanks for answering (smile)

Hmmm, I might try that though...maybe it's close to what I'm looking for.
Thanks !!

Thanks for writing and your research (smile). I've had Dusty's already
so maybe I'll give Fat Matt's a try along with Daddy D'z and see if
either can satisfy this craving for BBQ...thanks!! (NO, I'm not

I may have to "shut miiiiiiii mouth." I haven't tried Dusty's or Fat
Matt's. I know Dusty's has been there a long time, since the early
80's I believe and I have heard a few food things about it. I know
one place that I tried and think is over-rated and I won't go back is
Williams. They really knew how to cook the meat and the half-chicken
and bar-be-que tasted like it had a pound of brown sugar poured on it.
I wanted to puke it up all over the floor in the middle of the
restaurant. I hate to see somebody cooking the meat for 10 hours or
so, nice and tender and pink like a really good bar-be-que and then
glaze it with some type of concoction that would go over really well
on ice at the little league baseball world series.

For a variety of BBQ and sauces, try Spiced Right on L'ville Hwy up Lilburn
way. Another one that is not the same mold as Old Hickory House type BBQ is
Dusty's, corner of Briarcliff & Clifton. Basically, AIUI, you have sweet
sauce BBQ (Texas) and spicy vinegar sauce(Carolina style, the other two I
mentioned).
Each has it's place. I haven't heard of Wisconsin BBQ. You might try the
hot mustard sauce at Spiced Right and the 'sizzlin' at Dusty's, the latter
will dissuade anyone of any idea of 'sweet'. --jp

It depends on what style BBQ. There's Texas Style, Philly Style, Southern
Style, and so on.

Texas Style - Texas BBQ in Alpharetta. You get one rib. But when you get it
you immediately think "Flintstones".

- Country Buffet / Roadhouse Buffet. Various Locations. They have an
all-you-can-eat Beef BBQ ribs night.

Those are the two broad families. There are variants of both. Kansas
City BBQ is a more-surupy variant of Texas style, while there's a lot of
variation in the Carolina style. Some people will insist that BBQ is
either served on the bone or pulled, and that sliced brisket doesn't
belong. I have a certain sympathy with that argument as a purist, but I
like the stuff to much to shun for a mere principle.

:Each has it's place.

Agreed.

Some of the best Appalachian-style BBQ I've ever had was at Two Brothers
in Ballground, Georgia. There used to be three brothers, but one of them
had to go to Milledgeville. They made real pit BBQ -- not a brick thing
in the restaurant, but an honest-to-Jehovah hole in the back yard. I
might be inflating how good it was in my misty memory -- I haven't been
there in years, and don't even know if they're there any more.

I might be sounding like a commercial for Spiced Right, but they have a shed
in the back of the restaurant where they cook the meat. On weekends, at
least last time I was there, they have a buffet spread with several kinds of
BBQ and chicken as well as the side dishes.

Just curious-what was your opinon of Dusty's? It's been years since I
have eaten there, but I was never that impressed with their pork-I
didin't think it had much flavor. I don't think that they use any
wood in cooking it, but I might be wrong. I did like their sauces a
lot.
