The Tribes of Britain by David Miles

Did old Etonians eat their relatives? Archaeology brings up fascinating
questions about the history and nature of our mongrel nation. Along
with genetics, as A C Grayling discovers, it can overturn some of our
most tenaciously held national myths

Published: 24 July 2005

Both of the questions contained in the subtitle of David Miles's book
about the British - "who are we, and where do we come from?" - can be
simultaneously answered in just five words: "a mongrel people from
everywhere". It is a familiar enough thought (which Miles's copiously
fascinating account proves true) that the occupants of these islands
constitute one of the most mongrel nations on Earth. Or at least, that
applies to the English, though it is unlikely that any contemporary
Scot or Walian has escaped collecting a drop or two of the multiply
confluent genetic rivers that have poured into these islands from
prehistoric times onwards, as if we were the pooling point of a human
irrigation system flowing first westwards from all quarters of Europe,
then more latterly from all quarters of the world.
