In my mind, the single most contributing factor to the rise of atheism in Europe, is the Christian Church.

The ignorance of God displayed in the Church is unfathomable. Of course, now a days the Church is basically a harmless part of secular democracies.

But when the Church was first introduced into Europe it was with the power of the sword. The Church displayed extreme fanaticism, violence and intolerance in their campaign to convert the pagans.

The Church slaughtered everyone, including women and children all over Europe, in their fanatic zest to spread their particular version of God.

The inquisitions as well as the whole-sale slaughter by crusaders of entire gnostic villages, are well-known crimes committed by the Church.

So thinking people naturally turned against the special brand of God forced on them by the Church.

In Europe, because they had no sane version of God to turn to, naturally turned to Atheism in stead.

The so-called age of enlightenment, more than anything else, was a revolt against the Church by inquisitive people, who as a result chose to embrace Atheism.

But Atheism is never a good alternative to a corrupt Church, because Atheism turns humans into animals.

The solution is genuine spirituality as presented by God Himself in Bhagavad Gita. It is noteworthy in the words from God quoted below, that adherents of the Abrahamic religions who dominate the world at present, are all considered atheists.

They may consider themselves believers, but their actions show no regard for nature and her inhabitants, including people who don’t buy into their fanatic belief-systems.

Krishna says:

Those miscreants who are grossly foolish, who are lowest among mankind, whose knowledge is stolen by illusion, and who partake of the atheistic nature of demons do not surrender unto Me. (Bg 7.15 )

O best among the Bharatas, four kinds of pious men begin to render devotional service unto Me - the distressed, the desirer of wealth, the inquisitive, and he who is searching for knowledge of the Absolute. (Bg 7.16)

Of these, the one who is in full knowledge and who is always engaged in pure devotional service is the best. For I am very dear to him, and he is dear to Me. (Bg 7.17)

All these devotees are undoubtedly magnanimous souls, but he who is situated in knowledge of Me I consider to be just like My own self. Being engaged in My transcendental service, he is sure to attain Me, the highest and most perfect goal. (Bg 7.18)

After many births and deaths, he who is actually in knowledge surrenders unto Me, knowing Me to be the cause of all causes and all that is. Such a great soul is very rare. (Bg 7.19)

You Are correct, oh wise one. As soon as the populace figured out the
priests were a bunch of perverts, it was the end of organized religion.

All the educated youth in India will soon put you out on the street to
beg for food. Oh wait, you do that already - never mind.

I think the church may be only a tertiary cause. #2 would be the rise of
cultural institutions out of church control, from universities to
professional and social groups, along with labor unions and
mass membership political parties. Even where a version of the
Christian Church remains established, for some time now people
have been able to quit or at least opt out of paying a tithe or church
tax to the government.

#1 is the extremely low likelihood that there are any deities to believe in.
