Dec. 28, 2021 -- The coronavirus that causes COVID-19 can spread to
the heart and brain within days of infection and can survive for
months in organs, according to a new study by the National Institutes
of Health.

The virus can spread to almost every organ system in the body, which
could contribute to the ongoing symptoms seen in “long COVID”
patients, the study authors wrote. The study is considered one of the
most comprehensive reviews of how the virus replicates in human cells
and persists in the human body. It is under review for publication in
the journal Nature.

“This is remarkably important work,” Ziyad Al-Aly, MD, director of the
Clinical Epidemiology Center at the Veterans Affairs St. Louis Health
Care System in Missouri, told Bloomberg News. Al-Aly wasn’t involved
with this study but has researched the long-term effects of COVID-19.

“For a long time now, we have been scratching our heads and asking why
long COVID seems to affect so many organ systems,” he said. “This
paper sheds some light and may help explain why long COVID can occur
even in people who had mild or asymptomatic acute disease.”

The NIH researchers sampled and analyzed tissues from autopsies on 44
patients who died after contracting the coronavirus during the first
year of the pandemic. They found persistent virus particles in
multiple parts of the body, including the heart and brain, for as long
as 230 days after symptoms began. This could represent infection with
defective virus particles, they said, which has also been seen in
persistent infections among measles patients.

“We don’t yet know what burden of chronic illness will result in years
to come,” Raina MacIntyre, PhD, a professor of global biosecurity at
the University of New South Wales, told Bloomberg News.

“Will we see young-onset cardiac failure in survivors or early-onset
dementia?” she said. “These are unanswered questions which call for a
precautionary public health approach to mitigation of the spread of
this virus.”

Unlike other COVID-19 autopsy research, the NIH team had a more
comprehensive post-mortem tissue collection process, which typically
occurred within a day of the patient’s death, Bloomberg News reported.
The researchers also used a variety of ways to preserve tissue to
figure out viral levels. They were able to grow the virus collected
from several tissues, including the heart, lungs, small intestine, and
adrenal glands.

“Our results collectively show that while the highest burden of
SARS-CoV-2 is in the airways and lung, the virus can disseminate early
during infection and infect cells throughout the entire body,
including widely throughout the brain,” the study authors wrote.

Jan. 5, 2022 -- COVID-19 infections may leave behind antibodies that
turn on a person and attack their tissues and organs months after
recovery, even if they had few or no symptoms in the first place,
according to a study published in the Journal of Translational
Medicine.

People infected with a virus produce antibodies that fight off foreign
substances and disease.

Researchers have known for more than a year that severe cases of
COVID-19 may result in a person developing “autoantibodies” -- weapons
of the immune system that go rogue and launch an attack against the
body’s own tissues.

Cedars-Sinai scientists showed the same thing can happen in less
serious cases of COVID -- and as long as six months after recovery, a
Cedars-Sinai news release said.

“These findings help to explain what makes COVID-19 an especially
unique disease,” Justyna Fert-Bober, a research scientist at the Smidt
Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai and co-senior author of the study,
said in the news release.

“These patterns of immune dysregulation could be underlying the
different types of persistent symptoms we see in people who go on to
develop the condition now referred to as long COVID-19.”

The researchers took blood samples from 177 unvaccinated people who
were infected with COVID and compared them with samples from healthy
people taken before the pandemic. All the infected people had elevated
levels of autoantibodies, according to the study.

“We found signals of autoantibody activity that are usually linked to
chronic inflammation and injury involving specific organ systems and
tissues such as the joints, skin, and nervous system,” said Susan
Cheng, M.D., director of the Institute for Research on Healthy Aging
in the Department of Cardiology at the Smidt Heart Institute and
co-senior author of the study.

Researchers found more of the elevated autoantibody levels in men than
women – a surprise because some of the autoantibodies are most often
found in autoimmune diseases that affect women more than men.

“On the one hand, this finding is paradoxical given that autoimmune
conditions are usually more common in females,” Fert-Bober said. “On
the other hand, it is also somewhat expected given all that we know
about males being more vulnerable to the most severe forms of
COVID-19.”

The research teams wants to do more studies to see if these types of
autoantibodies are found in people with long COVID and also in
vaccinated people who develop breakthrough cases.

A team of scientists in Cyprus has identified a strain of the
coronavirus that apparently combines many of the characteristics of
the Delta and Omicron variants, according to a report on Saturday.

Bloomberg News said the discovery was given the moniker “Deltacron”
due to the identification of “Omicron-like genetic signatures within
the Delta genomes.”

Leondios Kostrikis, professor of biological sciences at the University
of Cyprus and head of the Laboratory of Biotechnology and Molecular
Virology, told Sigma TV in an interview cited by Bloomberg that 25
such cases had been identified so far.

“There are currently Omicron and Delta co-infections and we found this
strain that is a combination of these two,” Kostrikis said.

Kostrikis said although it was not yet known how infectious or
pathological the combined strain was, he believed it would likely be
displaced by the highly contagious Omicron variant.

The Cypriot team has sent the information on the combined strain to
the GISAID global science initiative, which is tracking variants.

The potential new variant came as the Omicron strain surged around the
world.

The World Health Organization said Thursday that a record 9.5 million
COVID-19 cases were tallied globally over the last week, a 71%
increase from the previous seven-day period. However, the number of
weekly recorded deaths declined.

While Omicron seems less severe than the Delta variant it has swiftly
replaced, especially among people who have been vaccinated, WHO
Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus cautioned against treating
it lightly.

“Just like previous variants, Omicron is hospitalizing people, and
it’s killing people,” he said. “In fact, the tsunami of cases is so

Actually, sin is **not** defined in 1 John 1:8-10
