I just saw the trailer for Ender's Game, being released in November, 2013.

Cool.

Of course, trailers show the very best parts, but it still looks like it's
gonna be great.

I'm hopeful.

Excellent.

Though Asa Butterfield is several years too old for Ender, who was 10
IIRC.

I don't have great hopes for the film. And while the twist in the book
is quite surprising, it's also artificial and based on a cheap trick,
i.e. not plot or character driven.

Yes.

I liked the book until then - it was too weird and made no sense.

For the uninitiated, the Bugger Queen says, "No Ender, *I* am your mother!"

Indeed.

But the real ending is more complex:

???

<SPOILERS AHEAD>

<I'D TURN BACK NOW IF I WERE YOU>

I thought the end was the perfect culmination of the plot laid out earlier
in the book. With all the attention directed at trying to understand how
the Buggers think in order to defeat them in battle, it never occurs to
anyone, until the reveal at the end, that the entire conflict was
completely unnecessary to begin with. Ultimately, they entrust the future
of their entire species to the hand of the one who destroyed them, once
they came to understand him better than he ever understood them. Perhaps I
am just overly sentimental, but it still chokes me up.
