The proof is out there ...

Seth Shostak is perfectly prepared to believe that aliens have visited
Earth. Just give him one piece of solid evidence

Thursday August 18, 2005
The Guardian

The good news is that the latest polls confirm that roughly half of all
Americans believe extraterrestrial life exists. The weird news is that
a similar fraction think some of it is visiting Earth.

Several recent TV shows have soberly addressed the possibility that
alien craft are violating our airspace, occasionally touching down long
enough to allow their crews to conduct bizarre experiments on hapless
citizens. While these shows tantalise viewers by suggesting that they
are finally going to get to the bottom of the "UFO debate", they never
do.

Yes, I know what you mean.
The trouble is that they insist on telling both sides of the story.
They call it balance, when it's really debunking.
Unlike programs on evolution

Turns out the theory of gravity is flawed. We need
to look at the theory of intelligent falling! LOL!

The main difference between those pesky aliens, and ID nut-cases, is
that IDers try to keep their anal probes private.

The scientific community thus far has done a really poor job of
explaining UFO phenomenon for many people to really buy into it. The
mystical explanation seems just as likely and a lot more attractive to
boot. The stuff about earth lights and similar theories are too
speculative at this point. That's why people throughout the world
believe in UFOs, whereas creationism is only popular in a few
fundamentalist countries. Scientists really need to get on the ball
explaining UFO sightings. They've gotten a good grasp on abductions
but UFO sightings, not so much.

The problem with these polls is that the questions are worded so
vaguely that they are meaningless. "Do you believe in UFOs?" Yes, a
UFO is an unidentified flying object. I see those myself every so
often. A better question would be, "Do you think UFOs are alien
spaceships in the Earth's atmosphere?" or "Do you think aliens have
visited Earth in recent human history?" To those questions my answer
would be no. The other question, "Do you think aliens exist?" Why
yes, I do think they exist. Look at how many stars are out there and
tell me how it's possible that only one out of 10^30 stars or whatever
evolved life. If the question were worded accurately, say, "Do you
think aliens have visited Earth in recent human history?" (notice this
is the same question as above), then my answer would again be no.

The whole point of UFOs, from a rational point of view is that they
are explicitly UNIDENTIFED.
And so, by definition, a "scientific" answer is only a guess.
A poor job is all that *can* be done.

1.) The people who witness UFO's just cannot recognize what they are
*really seeing.
or
2.) They're freekin' nuts.
( I had a guy tell me about a flashlight conversation he had
with a UFO. It kept ducking behind a cloud when he flashed, then came
out again to flash back at him in response - this guy was nuts, but
otherwise a perfectly functional human; rather like the fundies.)

I'm quite fond of "we don't know", at least in cases where that's the
truth.

I believe in UFOs; I just don't think they're flying saucers.

Very likely not all sightings have the same explanation. ISTM that
some have been explained and others haven't.

The current administration doesn't plan that far ahead. The future is
on a need to know basis, and they don't need to know.
