When I became an atheist, I started exploring the webrings dealing with
atheism and freethought. I found lots of comments and images concerning the
Christian God that were far less "positive," and I became curious how people
could view him in a negative light. One gif in particular got my attention -
a red demon with gaping mouth and razor-sharp teeth lusting for blood.
I decided I'd check into why people thought this. After reading the whole
Bible, I've come to the conclusion that these latter visions are more
accurate concepts of what the God of the Bible would look like if it
existed. What a twisted freak of the imagination!
But anyway, I'm wondering what others think of when they hear (or read)
"God"?

I usually become annoyed. As I grow older (keep in mind that I'm 25), the
prevalence of this hideous myth becomes more and more insidious. Considering
that the upcoming election is just about guaranteed to put a religious nut
into office, one way or another, it's all the more disturbing each time I see
something indicative of a person really buying into that nonsense. For
example, some hospital show where a doctor has just saved the life of some
person's family member, and they thank some friggin mythological being,
instead of the guy who spent eight years in school, worked up probably
$80,000 worth of debt, and has been in that ER fixing broken bodies for 16
hours.
If I were explicitly asked to come up with an image of the Christian god, I'm
inclined to think of the Terry Gilliam animation from Monty Python and the
Holy Grail - representative of the fact that it's a created entity.

As far as mental images, the one that sticks with me is "god" as drawn
by Larson, in the Far Side comic strip. (Long white hair, kinda
squinty eyes, doesn't look too terribly bright.)

I imagine a Roman statue of the divine Caligula.
The Church down the street, the bottle of vodka in the cabinet and the
matches on top of the fireplace.
Well alright, I get the old bearded man too, I just wanted to seem
original. However....... when I think about it in Norwegian I get the
image of a cross. Just a cross. On top of a roof. Weird.

Of course, I've seen the old man with the long white
hair and beard and bright staring eyes in pictures
all my life, but the image of God that I have is:
Yup, nothing. A voice coming out of nowhere. I think
this is due to a combination of being told at some
point that God had no form and seeing "The Ten
Commandments" reinforced this. Bill Cosby's
Noah skit re-reinforced this. Also, thinking about it
now, Olaf Stapledon's "Star-Maker" re-re-re-inforced
this with its story about humanity evolving into an
ultimate energy lifeform that combined with other
energy lifeforms on the road to becoming a kind of
god themselves.

That's funny. I used to have the same image. The church that I went to
as a kid had a stained glass window that depicted the Fall of Man. It
showed a stern looking god, with a long white beard, in a purple robe,
driving Adam and Eve from the Garden.
I described the image once as a pissed-off Santa Claus, in a purple
bathrobe, chasing two apple robbers.

Picture in your mind a total lack of sound, motion, color, life. You
have started on the right track. No add all that is anti-human,
reprehensible, cowardly, morally bankrupt & ethically foul. You are
getting closer. Add that which does not exist without fear & you
pretty much have a visual of my concept of the xian god. I presume
that was the one you had in mind as you capitalized a noun.
Well, that's what I had in mind, but that's only because I was raised in a
Christian community. However, any other "top-o-the-heap" god would do, I
suppose...

Amazing how generous God is with his "miracles". And what about that
most generous and thoughtful of miracles, small pox. It's the thought
that counts. God so loved small pox that he gave it a significant
slice of the human race to feast on.

Well, i had the fat-old-guy-holding-lightning-bolts image for awhile,
but more recently, for some odd reason, it has switched to something
like the principia discordias description of eris, for some odd
reason. The christian one, though, tends to be a skinny old guy

Nothing.
No, really, nothing. The more I've thought about the concept the more
it is apparent to me that it really signifies nothing intelligible.
If I'm reading something that demands some sort of referent, I tend to
think of the Church (catholic, or its similar version found in
Eddings' _Sapphire Rose_ trilogy).

Which brings up an interesting question: how do you grok the Elene
God as presented in the trilogy? He *is* unquestionably real, and
yet he seems as incomprehensible as the God of the Catholic Church.
(Which is of course by design; I mean no slight against Eddings there.)
I see him as sort of having an attitude of superiority and of course
absolutely no sense of humor.

I don't, really. The Elene god is an absentee landlord in Eddings'
book. The other gods are ->there<-, particularly the ones of the
supposedly 'primitive' peoples. But for the Elenes, it is the Church
itself which is important, not the god.
Frankly, I picture him as an empty office with a "Back in five
minutes" sign. (-:

We are told that about him, but we never actually need him. He's the
distant lord whose moods have little effect on his 'people'.

What's even more amusing is those couples who try and try and try and their god
says "no." Then they hit doctors and the fertility clinics, conceive and then
'thank their god for the gift'...ROFL.
Christians accept "Thy (God's) will be done" provided it matches what they want.

Well, maybe its brother or sister.

Really, it depends on the context. If the context of the discussion is
some literalist yutz's beliefs, I generally conjur an image of a neo-
Jovian old man throwing thunderbolts around. On the other hand, if I'm
reading a dissertation by a professional theologian, the "image" I form
is of something vast, abstract, and alien. Then there's the fluffy,
new-agey sort that brings to mind a warm and diffuse white light.
I will say that my favorite Christian representation of God is that of
sunbeams streaming through a gap in a bank of clouds (often accompanied
by harp music in films). I tend to think of real world examples of
that as "God weather".

My image is something like that, but with an irate expression, a
perpetual angry face.
