Ambrose Beirce even though I'm not much of fiction reader.

Just about anything by Oliver Sacks is brilliant.

Hard to say.

I'm sorry but I've always liked the Second Coming by Yeates
despite it's theism.

>

I'm sort of a movie buff so I feel almost obligated to say Citizen
Kane is my favorite movie. And it's certainly the best movie America has
ever produced. But there's a difference between best and favorite. My
favorite would have to be Fargo.
I watch The Simpsons, MST3k, The X-Files, and The Sopranos.

>
> 6) What type of music do you prefer? Who is your favorite musically related

I know everyone says they listen to all kinds of music, but I
really do. Right now I'm really into a group named Pink Martini, it has a
super cool latin sort of sound.
Can't really say that I have a favorite music related personality.

>
> 7) What types of art do you like? Who is your favorite artist?

I don't know. The art I most enjoy is usually made by people I've
never heard of before and never hear of after.

Diplomacy, a board game. Sort of like Risk only without any
element of chance, so you can't blame failure on anyone but you. It's a
blast to play through email.

I'm an atheist if you must know.

In recent threads, I have noticed that it would seem that atheists and
theists have real differences which go beyond the "a-" in the label.
Principally, it would seem that the basic world-view of theists differs in
real ways from the world-view of the atheist. I realize that this is an
over-simplification, but generally, it seems true.

Out of curiosity, I would like to ask a few questions slightly different
from those I usually see on these NG's.

I would ask that both theists and atheists answer, if you would. I would
like to an extremely non-scientific comparison of the results.

BTW, for those who are wondering, I do not intend to debate, question, or
otherwise harass anyone in this thread.

Thank you for participating.

Just an addendum. Please id yourself as an atheist or theist. Otherwise,
this will get very confusing.

Thanks!

So doing a study on Atheists and Theists to see how their different. I'm
interested in your results as long as they say were better. ha ha ha bit of my
sense of humor there.

>1) Who is your favorite author?

Carl Sagan heh just joking I really I don't have a favorite since the TV and
Computer I really havn't read many books.

>2) What is your favorite non-fiction book?

Again I don't read many books but I would have to the Atlas of the universe.
(It's about space not maps)

>3) What is your favorite fiction book?

Afraid I don't have a favorite

>4) What is your favorite poem?

This is only my opinion but Eck! I don't like poetry.

>5) Do you watch TV or movies? If so, what is your favorite movie? Your
>favorite TV show?

Hard to decide This new cartoon called Family Guy seems pretty funny. I watch
all the educational channels once and awhile. That and I really love MST3K

As for movies I really loved the movie Braveheart lots of cool hand to hand
combat. Lets face it lot's of cool movies out there Star Wars, Planet of the
apes Happy Gilmore. hard to decide.

>6) What type of music do you prefer? Who is your favorite musically related
>personality?
>
>

Heavy metal and rock & roll. I really love Black Sabbath and Metallica. Though
I'll sometimes listen to Rush

>7) What types of art do you like? Who is your favorite artist?

Nothing wrong with art I just can't stand all that abstract crap with ladies
that look like guitars. If your going draw make sure I can tell what it is. I
like all those unfamous artists out there drawling monsters and spaceships all
those people making art for games etc.

>8) What is your favorite game?

I like almost all RPGs for computers and consoles. My Favorites are
Dragon Warrior series
Phantasy star series
Warcraft
Civilization,etc

Favorite board games are Monopoly and Chess

Movies, but mostly only "educational" TV.

One of my favorite movies is "The 5th Element". Campy Euro-Sci-Fi comedy.

Oh, boy, this one's gonna blow you away...

King's X (heavy Christian Rock). I don't like the lyrics on some (too
theistic) but Ty plays a mean axe, and Doug's voice has an interesting
quality.

Virtually anything from Organum to Renaissance to Opera to Rage
Against The Machine. It would be easier to list the music I *don't*
prefer: contemporary Country/Western and the current crop of shrieking
pop divas (Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, etc).

> 1) Who is your favorite author?

Can't name just one. Here are a few: Mikhail Bulgakov, J.R.R.Tolkien,
Fedor Dostoyevsky, James Joyce.

> 2) What is your favorite non-fiction book?

Again, it would be impossible to name just one. A couple of important ones
would be _The World since 1945_ by T.E. Vadney, _Six Easy Pieces_ by R.P.
Feynman, _Human Diversity_ by Richard Lewontin, and the trilogy on 19th
Century history by Hobsbawm.

> 3) What is your favorite fiction book?

I'll say _The Master and Margarita_ by Mikhail Bulgakov, although there
are lots of others which could do equally well.

> 4) What is your favorite poem?

Getting tougher and tougher... I can't decide on this one. Maybe something
by Federico Garcia Lorca.

> 5) Do you watch TV or movies? If so, what is your favorite movie? Your
> favorite TV show?

Don't have a TV anymore. However, some of my favorite shows were ... Monty
Python's Flying Circus, Allo Allo!, Yes Minister, (those Brits seem to be
the only ones doing anything worth watching on TV anyway). Movies I do
watch; can't name a single favorite. Just saw _The Party_ (Blake
Edwards/Peter Sellers) and loved it. My taste is pretty eclectic, running
the gamut from _Le Chien Andalou_ to _Star Wars_ (but not all the way to
Lethal Weapon, ugh). Some favorites: _The City of Lost Children_,
_Heavenly Creatures_, _Meet the Feebles_.

> 6) What type of music do you prefer? Who is your favorite musically related
> personality?

Again, pretty eclectic. I enjoy classical music, but listen to it very
little at home (I go to concerts). I have a weakness for French chanson
(Jacques Brel in particular) and enjoy Russian rock (Akvarium and Kino in
particular). I also like R.E.M. and Red Hot Chili Peppers, but, again,
rarely put a disc on.

> 7) What types of art do you like? Who is your favorite artist?

Good art. Duh.

Picasso still bowls me over -- except his late junk, of course. Don't much
care for Rembrandt, but very much like Vermeer. Like Michelangelo's
sculpture, but don't care for his frescoes. Like Titian and particularly
Botticelli, but Raphael leaves me cold. Really like Goya. Don't like
David. Hate Ingres. Of the Finnish artists (as if anyone would care), I
love Hugo Simberg.

> 8) What is your favorite game?

Again, a tough one. I DM AD&D regularly, but it's not because I'm in love
with it as a _game_. Monopoly is fun every once in a while, except that I
get annoyed if I lose and feel sorry for the others if I win.

For the record, I am an atheist. :)

>1) Who is your favorite author?

I like so many authors, both historical and living, that I cannot choose
a favorite off-hand.

Again, that would take more contemplation than would be sufficiently
chronologically economic to put in this post.

The Foundation Trilogy (Asimov)

>4) What is your favorite poem?

I don't care much for poetry.

The Star Wars saga is my favorite set of movies, my favorite TV shows

>6) What type of music do you prefer? Who is your favorite musically related

Um, I like Industrial Goth such as Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails
(Trent Reznor) and Rob Zombie. I can also appreciate some punk and I am a
fan of classical music as a whole.

>7) What types of art do you like? Who is your favorite artist?

I can't really get into much traditional art. I suppose my favorite

Of traditional games, Chess is my favorite. If I count computer games, I
like RTSs and 1st person shooters, though the reining champions in each
classification are constantly changing.

Atheist, to start...

> 1) Who is your favorite author?

Bill Harlow, author of Circle William, available at Amazon.com (ok, so
he's my cousin) -- shameless plug aside, I don't really have a favorite
author. I read a fair bit though.

> 2) What is your favorite non-fiction book?

No favorites...tend to read books on religion, cosmology, politics,
etc...

> 3) What is your favorite fiction book?

Again, don't have one...read some sci-fi, horror, mystery...

> 4) What is your favorite poem?

"Love's Philosophy" by Shelley (if memory serves me)

Movie: "Say Anything"
TV: "X-Files" -- although I also watch "Just Shoot Me," "Frasier," and
(no comments please) "World's Scariest Police Videos (or whatever)".
Nothing like seeing a criminal get what he deserves by his own stupid
hand.

> 6) What type of music do you prefer? Who is your favorite musically related

I prefered alternative when the word actually meant something in the
music world. Radio is pretty much sonic fluff. Currently in my CD
player I have Emmett Swimming, John Prine, Matthew Sweet, The Cult, and
Rage Against The Machine. I also listen to a little bit of everything
else, although I generally disdain country music and rap (although Shania
Twain shore is purty).

> 7) What types of art do you like? Who is your favorite artist?

Van Gogh -- my favorite work is Cafe Terrace at Night (although I've seen
it called other names in different books)

Not much time for playing games these days, although I still periodically
fire up the original Descent for some on-line butt kicking.

Don't have one. Non-fiction isn't about preference (well, sometimes), it's
about quality.

Guess? Ok, "Lord of The Rings" by JRRT.

Not much for poetry, but since i can only remember one by heart, it's got to
be the "The One Ring" again by JRRT.

Favorite movie? Tough one! Currently, i'd say "Leon".
TV show? Easy! Simpsons.

Lately i've turned to 70's rock. Bands like Jethro Tull and the like. It
*is* a scientific fact that rock'n'roll achieved perfection in '74. I don't
go for the cult of personality. I listen to music mainly for the lyrics, and
after that the mood.

I like any art that makes you think. Modern paintings, i s'pose. Míro et al.

It's a tie: _Frozen Star_, by George Greenstein, about the

Mostly fairly concrete stuff, with a little surrealism thrown
in for good measure. I've never been one for symbolic forms of art;
apart from their aesthetic pleasantness (or lack thereof), they're
just colored blobs and squares to me. I think most modern art
"discussion" is so much BS -- there's a nifty little section in the
aforementioned _Godel, Escher, Bach_ where Hofstadter gives a list
of paragraphs, some taken from a contemporary art journal, and others
generated randomly and nonsensically by a computer, and invites the
reader to distinguish between the two.

>8) What is your favorite game?

Computer game: Star Control II. Everyone should play this game.

Other game: Umm Monopoly.

I am an atheist lurker (this is my first post)

>>
>> 1) Who is your favorite author?

I have many, including Asimov, Niven, and Sagan.

>> 2) What is your favorite non-fiction book?

Must be Sagan's "Demon Haunted World"

>> 3) What is your favorite fiction book?

Umm. hard to decide. Lets see, I loved "Watership Down". "I, Robot", by
Asimov. "Ringworld" was good.

>> 4) What is your favorite poem?

Parts of Isaiah (the parts written during the captivity, i.e.
Deutero-Isaiah). I appreciate the hopeless despair about why Jehovah is
punishing his people. I find it an eye-opener into the heart of a people,
beaten and bruised, clinging on to hope for the future.

>> 5) Do you watch TV or movies? If so, what is your favorite movie? Your
>> favorite TV show?

My favorite TV programs are (in no particular order):
1)Star Trek: Deep Space 9. Here, we see the theists (Bajorans) who worship
the worm-hole aliens with lots of ritual, and the atheists/scientist, who
understand the wormhole aliens as aliens and who understand the mechanisms
by which these aliens operate.
2) The Simpsons. Great satire.
3) Southpark. Anyone who has Satan throwing a fight to Jesus in order to
make some money wins my vote.
4) King of the Hill. I just about died laughing when Bobby gave his Jesus
the Magician speech in church.
My favorite movies are:
1) Contact. A movie about wonder with hope for the future.
2) The Empire Strikes Back. Even with all of the New Age nonsense, I like
space. With all of the external proof of the Force, though, I find it hard
to believe that some of the people in Star Wars would be non-believers.

>> 6) What type of music do you prefer? Who is your favorite musically
related
>> personality?

I like classical, pop, hip-hop. Mozart is my favorite musical personality (I
loved Amadeaus).

>> 7) What types of art do you like? Who is your favorite artist?

I not much into art, but I like landscapes. No particular artist.

>> 8) What is your favorite game?

Currently, Thief and Age of Empires.

That’s really hard to decide... "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo stands
out.

>4) What is your favorite poem?

"The Figures on the Frieze" by Alastair Reid

>5) Do you watch TV or movies? If so, what is your favorite movie? Your
>favorite TV show?

For film, "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" is an easy favorite followed by
"Muriel’s Wedding". For TV, it sort of depends on the type of show you mean...
I enjoy "The Operation" on TLC, and usually watch "The Pretender" and "Law &
Order" on NBC.

>6) What type of music do you prefer? Who is your favorite musically related
>personality?

I don’t really prefer any kind of music. In my car right now I have Bjork, B.
B. King, Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, ABBA, Willie Nelson, Tori Amos and a whole
bunch more. I don’t particularly like rap, but that’s about it.
As for personalities, I think more or less everyone is a puppet of agents and
publicists anymore, so it would be hard to say what any of them are actually
like.

>7) What types of art do you like? Who is your favorite artist?

Impressionist, Degas.

>8) What is your favorite game?

Define "game". I play chess often, love word games like Scrabble and spend
enough time playing Tetris that I’m getting calluses on my thumbs.

Hmm... Tie between Shakespeare (yeah, yeah, I know) and Ayn Rand. The
runner-up is H. P. Lovecraft.

>2) What is your favorite non-fiction book?

Again, it's a tie. Either the Satanic Bible by Anton Szandor LaVey or
my really well-written history textbook, "Mastering Modern World
History" by Norman Lowe.

>3) What is your favorite fiction book?

Dangerous Liaisons by Choderlos de Laclos (If you've read it, please
e-mail me! - I know absolutely no one who shares my enthusiasm for
this book).

>4) What is your favorite poem?

I'll have to go for another cliché: anything by Poe, particularly
"Alone". Also anything by a Danish poet named Tove Ditlevsen.

>5) Do you watch TV or movies? If so, what is your favorite movie? Your
>favorite TV show?

I don't watch television, but my favorite movies are Natural Born
Killers and Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet.
Oh, and a Swedish movie called "Fucking Aamaal" (Aamaal is the name of
a town) that is still playing in obscure theaters all over Europe and
probably the States as well. Go see it if you get the chance. And,
like with Dangerous Liaisons, e-mail me if you've had the pleasure
already. I'd love to hear from a non-Scandinavian about this movie.

>6) What type of music do you prefer? Who is your favorite musically related
>personality?

Music, well, a broad range. Industrial metal is probably my favorite,
but I like classical, opera, sixties stuff (including Beatles),
happy-go-lucky music like the Violent Femmes, some popular stuff like
Radiohead and Tori Amos....

My favorite musically related personality would have to be Trent
Reznor.

>7) What types of art do you like? Who is your favorite artist?

Contemporary Russian art, particularly by artists such as Andrei
Medvedev (my favorite), Yuri Senchenko and the Martinchiks.

>8) What is your favorite game?

I don't play anymore, but RPGs are great.

For the record, I'm atheist.

Godel, Escher, Bach by Hofstadter

Book? Well, the Dunwich Horror and other tales by Lovecraft.

Poetry, huh? Okay, anything by Charles Bukowski, but it's been years since I
read him.

TV: South Park or Simpsons, not much else, unless you include baseball or

Movies: Brazil, anything by Cronenberg, 2001: Space Odyssey

>6) What type of music do you prefer? Who is your favorite musically related

My tastes are pretty eclectic but I tend to listen to really extreme
isolationist stuff, like Autechre, Controlled Bleeding, Scorn, or Merzbow. The
more mainstream stuff I like would be Godflesh, Swans, or early Foetus.

Musical Personality: Frank Zappa.

Performance stuff. Survival Research Labs.

I am technically an atheist. To tell you the truth, I usually don't have
favorites of anything, but here
goes:

>1) Who is your favorite author?

Voltaire.

Voltaire's "Philosophical Dictionary."

Some cute atheist will no doubt say "The Bible." I am not cute. I say "Don
Quixote."

Baroque classical music. Bach.

This is my follow up to the questionnaire.

I honestly can derive only one or two conclusions from the responses.

I believe that many of the responses are more indicative of the type of
person who uses computers and the internet than of a particular atheist or
theist mind-set.

The only significant response which may be reflective was the choice of
Sagan's works as "favorite non-fiction".

In the other categories, responses did not seem to generally fit any type of
pattern. However, if you see such a pattern, let me know.

I do not think this line of inquiry is useless; I will attempt to formulate
a second series of questions which might reflect the details of personal
world views.

Thank you again to all who participated.

Any comments will be welcome.

36 or so atheists, a few by email.
3 theists, including myself.
1 "neither" one.

It was lacking on theist side, I used a group of theists I know personally
as the comparison group, which is probably not quite fair, but it was the
best sample I had.

When I post the next set, I will probably include 1 more religious group.

Ooh, a poll!

> 1) Who is your favorite author?

This one's a tie between Terry Pratchett and Mercedes Lackey.

> 2) What is your favorite non-fiction book?

I don't read a whole lot of non-fiction. As a rule, I like good biology
books, and I all but devour material about wolves, such as "The Wolf" (by
David Mech?) and "Wolf unter Wölfen" (by Werner Freund). Marvellous animals.
:)

Also, "The Great Cosmic Mother" (Sjöö/Mor), "So You Want to be a Lesbian?"
(Tracey/Pokorny) and "Melissa Etheridge" (Joyce Luck) make rather good reads.

> 3) What is your favorite fiction book?

Book? Where's the plural "s"? I couldn't name a single favourite if my life
depended on it. ;)

Discworld novels (by Terry Pratchett): Reaper Man, Hogfather and Soul Music
come in first, followed by Small Gods, Witches Abroad and Feet of Clay, to
mention but a few.

Novels by Mercedes Lackey: The Heralds of Valdemar Trilogy, The Mage Winds
Trilogy, By the Sword, The Last Herald Mage Trilogy, Vows and Honor: The
Oathbound (Book I) and Oathbreakers (Book II)

> 4) What is your favorite poem?

I don't like poetry, really -- you may blame school for that. "The Raven" by
Poe is good, though, and there are some nice poems/songs in some of Mercedes
Lackeys novels.

> 5) Do you watch TV or movies?

Rarely -- TV/movies are usually a damn waste of time.

> If so, what is your favorite movie?

Alien, Aliens, Alien3, Alien Resurrection (Lieutenant Ellen Ripley KICKS MAJOR
ASS, and the Aliens themselves are absolutely loveable) and When Night is
Falling. If I'd have to decide on ONE favourite movie, it would be Aliens.

> Your favorite TV show?

None, but I like nature and science documentaries. Discovery is great -- I
often miss it, though. :(

> 6) What type of music do you prefer?

Rock, some pop and some New Age stuff (yeah, so shoot me, I don't care --
Oliver Shanti & Friends make *great* music*), also Celtic/Irish music. My
favourite artists and bands include Melissa Etheridge, the Pet Shop Boys,
Roxette, Oliver Shanti & Friends, Enigma, and Ronan Hardiman.

Keep rap, techno and heavy metal safely away from me, and everyone will be
happy.

> Who is your favorite musically related personality?

Melissa Etheridge, hands down. She's courageous, stunningly beautiful, and her
voice and "presence" floor me every time I watch or listen to her.

<dreamy sigh>

Now if only she'd get her ass in gear and release her next CD!

> 7) What types of art do you like? Who is your favorite artist?

Art? Ehh ... I plead the 5th here, as I'm really not into art. I do like
scenery and animal photos, though, and some fantasy art, especially images of
dragons (but spare me the all-too-common insipid bikini-clad bimbos with
balloon boobs).

Hmm -- does roleplaying count as an art form? I wish I could find a group;
unfortunately, it's a bit hard when you live in Germany but want to play in
English ... :(

> 8) What is your favorite game?

1. The Ultima series, especially Ultima VII (both parts & add-ons)!
2. Baldurs' Gate!

Plus, in no particular order: The Secret of Monkey Island I & II (the best
adventures ever -- if you don't know them, run, don't walk, to buy 'em!),
StarCraft (plus Brood War), Turrican II (I loved that game back in the days of
my old Amiga 500), Discworld 2 ...

In general, think of me as a CRPG-lover. :)

Currently, Terry Pratchett.

I don't know. For favorite *type* of non-fiction, I like history, but only the

in this catagory is The History of Hell.

Eh, why not. I'm really bad at choosing "favorites", though, but I'll
try to limit it to two or three. Af that's a problem, go with the
first item.

> 1) Who is your favorite author?

Greg Bear and Larry Niven.

> 2) What is your favorite non-fiction book?

_The Demon-Haunted World_ by Carl Sagan (displacing _Cosmos_, also by
Sagan)

> 3) What is your favorite fiction book?

_Diaspora_ by Greg Egan and _The Wounded Sky_ by Diane Duane

(I notice that none of my favorite books were written by either of my
favorite authors. Hmmm.)

> 4) What is your favorite poem?

Errm, not really into poetry. The closest thing I can think of is the
"Deteriorata", which was a National Lampoon parody of the
"Desiderata".

"You are a fluke of the universe.
You have no right to be here.
And, whether you can hear it or not,
The universe is laughing behind your back."

> 5) Do you watch TV or movies? If so, what is your favorite movie? Your
> favorite TV show?

Yes, both.

TV: _Star Trek_ has to be my all-time favorite, but my current
favorites are the now-moribund <sniff> _Mystery Science Theater 3000_
and _The Daily Show with Jon Stewart_

Movie: Tough one. Probably _Rock and Rule_, although I've seen _The
Lion King_ at least six times (and, no, I *don't* have kids! <g>).

> 6) What type of music do you prefer? Who is your favorite musically related
> personality?

Pop music, preferably offbeat. "Weird Al" Yankovic and They Might Be
Giants.

> 7) What types of art do you like? Who is your favorite artist?

I'm sure that everyone in a.a. will be shocked to find that "Furry"
(anthropomorphic) art is my favorite. >8-P~~~ (If you don't know

My favorite artist is probably Ken Singshow, but Paul Defenbaugh has a
lot of good stuff, too.

I don't usually play games, but I can be talked into playing
volleyball.
