It might not. A person can be perfectly happy believing
nonsense. If you believe that it is safe to drop elemental
sodium into a container of water, and you never actually do
any chemistry, it won't affect your life any. If you get

using, things could get deadly. If you were a drover, and
you "believed" that bulls aren't dangerous, you might be in

The practical reason for atheists to "proselytize" is to
get fence-sitters to realize that it is OK to be an atheist,
and to resist calls by the religious to reintroduce religious
practices into the government, and to push back by removing
those that persist. It isn't about making people live religion-
free lives, as much as it is allowing people to live religion-
free lives if they so choose. I can decide whether to go to
church or not, whether to associate with the type of religious
people who are in-your-face about religion, or not. I don't get
to choose whether or not I pay taxes, so the common treasuries of
the state where I linve, nor the federal government, should not
be spending public funds on promoting religion over irreligion -
or vice versa! - or in favor of one sect over another.

This is Civics 101, but the religious kooks, from those who don't
care if the White House spends money on a National Prayer Day
proclamation to the Dominionists, are just wrong about the Constitution.
They act as if the 14th Amendment never passed, and they can't fathom
that someone, believer or not, might support free exercise and oppose
government subsidy. They also can't separate freedom of speech by a private
individual from speech by an official in his official capacity as an
employee of local, state or federal government. A public schoolteacher
might be a deacon of his church, but when he is "on the clock" at
school he is to be as neutral towards religion and irreligion as the
Constitution requires. Nothing prevents him from "acting like a
Christian," of course: being kind to others, helping them.* Knock
off with "ghod save this honorable court" and interpret the law
fairly, if you please, without sign of favor to any group.

When I ask for evidence of some theist's god, I often ask them not to use
their Bible or other religious writings, since they are all mythology to
me. If they can't do this, whatever they plan to use as evidence is just mythological nonsense to me and they are just wasting their time. The same
applies to religious faith which is proof of nothing and is purely personal.
They can forget using the interpolations in Josephus' writings, too. If
they can't prove their godthing exists in a material way, in time and space, logical, reasonable way, they can wipe the dust off their clodhoppers and scarper off.

Some towns and cities mentioned in the Bible existed and may even still exist.
But, the stories that supposedly take place in them during Biblical times are most likely inventions of a scribe or his master or a priest.

There's a very practical reason for it. The biggest extant mosque here in Plovdiv was built at a point along an old Roman wall for the same reason. The Chefte bath down the street from me was built on the site of an old Christian church by the Ottomans. The old building was a convenient quarry of stone for the new. No new materials needed and no transportation necessary.
